| NIT Srinagar organizes three SERB-SSR programs to promote Scientific learning and research exposure | | Srinagar, September 02 (Scoop News)-The Department of Physics at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar organized a series of three Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) programs under the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), aimed at promoting experiential scientific learning and providing participants with exposure to advanced research facilities, instrumentation, and contemporary experimental techniques.
The initiative commenced with a scientific outreach program for school students titled “Beyond the Textbooks: Hands-on Experiment, Physics Experience, and Exploration.” Around 50 students and faculty members from Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Soura, and Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Shopian, participated in the program.
The outreach program was organized under the Core Research Grant (CRG) project, on “Fabrication of Cu₂ZnSnS₄/MoS₂ Nanocomposite Photoelectrodes for Hydrogen Evolution.” Under the Core Research Grant Scheme, PAC Physics-I (Condensed Matter Physics and Material Sciences) – General, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) sanctioned the research project in 2023 to Dr. Mohammad Zubair Ansari.
The project focuses on the fabrication and study of Cu₂ZnSnS₄/MoS₂ nanocomposite photoelectrodes for hydrogen evolution and forms the scientific basis for promoting awareness and hands-on learning in advanced materials, renewable energy, and hydrogen-generation technologies.
The program introduced school students to practical aspects of physics through laboratory demonstrations and hands-on experiments. The sessions were conducted under the guidance of Ph.D. scholars and faculty members of the Department of Physics.
The programs were coordinated by Dr. Mohd. Zubair Ansari, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, NIT Srinagar, who is also the Principal Investigator of the Core Research Grant project.
In his message, Director of NIT Srinagar, Prof. Anurag Misra, emphasized the responsibility of scientific institutions to extend research knowledge and access to advanced laboratory facilities beyond their immediate academic community.
He said that such initiatives can nurture scientific curiosity among students at an early stage while also providing faculty members and researchers with opportunities to gain greater exposure to modern scientific techniques and instrumentation.
Registrar, NIT Srinagar, Prof. Atikur Rehman, said that the SERB-SSR activities reflect the institute’s commitment to experiential learning, scientific outreach, and knowledge sharing.
He noted that exposure to sophisticated research facilities can help students and researchers develop a better understanding of contemporary scientific practices while encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and research.
The outreach sessions enabled students to connect classroom concepts with practical applications and encouraged observation, questioning, and scientific inquiry. Certificates were distributed to the participating students and faculty members at the conclusion of the program.
As part of the initiative, the Department of Physics subsequently conducted a two-day faculty workshop on “Academic Interaction and Scientific Exposure: Integrating Characterization, Instrumentation, and Scientific Innovation” on August 6 and 7. The workshop focused on scientific knowledge exchange, academic interaction, and familiarization with the advanced research facilities available at NIT Srinagar.
The technical sessions covered diverse areas, including bioimaging, cosmic visitors, advanced characterization techniques, zinc oxide-based materials, hydrogen and fuel technologies, and XRD Rietveld refinement.
The participating faculty members also visited the Central Research Facility Center and Physics laboratories, where they were introduced to sophisticated instruments and facilities, including Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence, and resistance-temperature (RT) measurement systems.
The series concluded with a Research Facility Training Program on Advanced Analytical Techniques on August 12. The one-day program brought together research scholars from different academic departments for practical demonstrations and hands-on training in the use and applications of sophisticated analytical facilities.
During the program, research scholars received demonstrations and technical exposure to photoluminescence spectroscopy, cryostat-based RT measurement systems, 3D laser printing, fluorescence spectroscopy, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and an advanced hydrothermal reactor. The program concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participating research scholars.
The three SERB-SSR programs provided participants across different academic levels with direct exposure to experiential learning, advanced instrumentation, and NIT Srinagar’s research infrastructure.
The initiative strengthened interaction among schools, faculty members, research scholars, and the institute’s wider scientific community, while facilitating broader academic utilization of the institute’s scientific and research facilities under the SERB-SSR framework.
