| CUKashmir hosts workshop on ‘Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Education’ | |
Ganderbal, September 02 (Scoop News)- Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath Tuesday said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the educational, research and employment landscape, and emphasized that technological advancements must ultimately contribute to improving the quality of human life and serve societal needs.
“AI is creating new possibilities for economic empowerment and intellectual-property generation,” Prof. A Ravinder Nath said while inaugurating the two-day international workshop on “Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Education”, (International Academic Partnership Meet), organised by the Department of Information Technology, at varsity’s Tulmulla campus here.
Highlighting the importance of partnerships and knowledge-sharing in harnessing emerging technologies, Prof. A Ravinder Nath, stressed the importance of converting India’s vast data resources and demographic dividend into useful information for developing policies, products and processes. He underlined the need to use emerging technologies responsibly and productively, ensuring that the additional time and convenience created by technology were channeled towards creativity, innovation and human concerns.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Romshoo, Chief Guest, said the workshop was being organised at a time when AI had become an integral part of contemporary life and education. Recalling the evolution of access to knowledge—from books and libraries to the internet, search engines and now generative AI—he observed that humanity had moved from accessing information to accessing increasingly sophisticated tools capable of processing and generating knowledge. Prof. Romshoo, however, cautioned that merely using tools such as ChatGPT should not be mistaken for becoming AI competent. He stressed the need to move beyond AI literacy towards becoming “AI wise”, with human judgement, creativity, imagination and wisdom continuing to remain indispensable. He maintained that AI could not replace the teacher, but would transform the teacher’s role, allowing educators to devote greater attention to creativity, inspiration, critical thinking and meaningful engagement with students.
Chairman, Vision Digital India and AI Evangelist, Dr. Hari Krishna Maran, said AI was not about replacing human intelligence but about making work simpler, more productive and innovative. He informed that the AI Training Mission of Vision Digital India, supported by Intel, had already expanded across educational institutions, with the workshop also witnessing the establishment of its 99th AI Lab.
Addressing the gathering, Director, Finland 2030 Educational Initiatives, Ms. Meike Krautscheid, said AI was expected to transform a substantial proportion of jobs globally and that education would be among the sectors most significantly affected. She stressed the need for developing human capabilities in synergy with technology and outlined five key pillars of the Finland 2030 co-academic curriculum—socio-emotional skills, 21st-century life skills, career planning, innovation and entrepreneurship, and global outlook and awareness.
In his address, Dean, School of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir, said AI had transcended geographical boundaries and had emerged as a transformative force in education. He observed that AI should be viewed not merely as a source of disruption but as a technology that would change the nature and content of jobs. He urged students and faculty to acquire new competencies early and remain prepared for a rapidly changing employment environment. “Early bird catches the worm,” he said, stressing the importance of learning AI at the earliest.
Dean, International Affairs Prof. Sandhya Tiwari, who chaired the session, (special lecture on International Academic Partnership Meet on emerging Technologies) by Dr. Sonal Kumar, highlighted the importance of adaptability, continuous learning and international academic partnerships in an era of rapid technological transformation. She stressed that institutions and individuals must be prepared to learn, unlearn and relearn, while remaining open to new knowledge and opportunities. Prof. Tiwari described knowledge as the factor that transcends boundaries and urged students to combine strong foundations with openness to new learning.
Earlier, in her presentation, Dr. Sonal Kumar, Vice President, Stevens Strategy, USA, shared critical insights on the transformation of higher education. She emphasized the need for Indian universities to adopt data-driven, globally aligned strategies. Dr. Kumar stressed that under NEP 2020, institutions must focus on crafting strategic visions, modernizing teaching pedagogy, and embracing technology modernization, particularly around AI and examination lifecycles.
The dignitaries also inaugurated AI trainer, Centre of Excellence at CUKashmir and released Global Research Journal started by Harvard University in collaboration with the Global Economic Forum.
Organizing Chair of the workshop, Dr. Yash Paul, said the programme aims to promote meaningful engagement with emerging applications of AI in teaching-learning, academic research, content creation, productivity enhancement, assessment and other areas of higher education.
