| NIT Srinagar Holds Cricket Match, Tug-of-War as Sports Activities Continue | |
Srinagar, August 29 (Scoop News)- The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar organised a cricket match between students and faculty and staff members on Saturday, besides holding a Tug-of-War competition among students as part of its ongoing sports activities aimed at promoting fitness, teamwork and a healthy competitive spirit on campus.
The cricket match witnessed enthusiastic participation from both teams and provided students, faculty and staff an opportunity to showcase their sporting skills while strengthening interaction and team spirit.
Batting first, the students’ team posted 132 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 20 overs at a run rate of 6.60. Faisal Rasool scored 40 runs off 40 balls, including three fours and a six. Umaid Bashir, who captained the students’ side, contributed 14 runs off eight balls, while Mohammad Ayan scored 13 runs off 15 balls.
On the bowling side, Saqib Malik was the leading wicket-taker, returning figures of four overs, no maidens, 29 runs and three wickets. Shabir-Ibn-Yousuf also claimed three wickets, conceding 19 runs in four overs. Prince Sharma took two wickets for 13 runs in two overs, while Ayush Shrivastav picked up one wicket for 20 runs in three overs.
Shahid Hamid bowled two overs and conceded 12 runs, while Dr Manoj Kumar conceded 15 runs in two overs. Faisal bowled two overs for 14 runs, while Sohail Baba bowled one over and conceded six runs.
In reply, the faculty and staff team, representing NIT Srinagar J&K, scored 135 runs for the loss of one wicket in 13.2 overs, chasing down the target with nine wickets in hand and 40 balls to spare.
Aaqib Sheikh anchored the chase with an unbeaten 63 off 44 balls, including five fours and five sixes, at a strike rate of 143.18. Sohail Baba, who also kept wickets, remained unbeaten on a brisk 59 off 33 balls, with three fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 178.79.
Faisal Irshad, captain of the faculty and staff side, scored four runs off three balls before being dismissed leg-before-wicket by Umaid Bashir, who claimed the only wicket for the students.
The faculty and staff innings included nine extras—eight wides and one bye—and recorded a run rate of 10.13.
The cricket match was followed by a Tug-of-War competition among students, which witnessed active participation and enthusiasm. The event emphasised teamwork, coordination, physical fitness, collective effort and sporting discipline.
Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Anurag Misra, said sports are an important component of holistic student development and play a significant role in building discipline, leadership, resilience and team spirit.
He appreciated the enthusiastic participation of students, faculty and staff and said the institute would continue to provide opportunities for students to engage in sports and extracurricular activities alongside academics.
