CAT Jammu Bench Holds Circuit Sitting at Leh; More Than 32 Cases Heard at ADR Centre

Leh, August 22 (Scoop News)-In a significant step towards facilitating access to justice for the people of the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Jammu Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) today held a Circuit Sitting at the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre, Melongthang, Leh.

The Circuit Bench was presided over by Hon’ble Mr. Ram Mohan Johri, Member (Judicial), and Hon’ble Mr. Diwakar Singh, Member (Administrative). The sitting was exclusively devoted to cases pertaining to applicants and petitioners from Ladakh, providing them an opportunity to pursue their grievances without having to travel to Jammu.

At the commencement of the sitting, the Hon’ble Members of the Tribunal were accorded a traditional welcome with Khataks by Mr. Shahnawaz Ali, OSD to Secretary, Law, along with staff members of the Department, on behalf of Shri Qureshi Tariq Mahmood, Consultant/Secretary, Department of Law and Justice, UT Ladakh.

During the Circuit Sitting, the Bench heard more than 32 cases pertaining to applicants and petitioners from Ladakh. Appropriate relief was also granted in a number of cases in accordance with law.

The proceedings were attended by a large number of advocates, counsels, applicants, petitioners and other stakeholders. The litigants and advocates appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Tribunal proceedings at Leh, which substantially reduced the inconvenience and expenses associated with travelling to Jammu.

The Circuit Sitting assumes significance in view of Ladakh’s difficult geographical terrain and the considerable distance involved in travelling to Jammu. Holding proceedings within the Union Territory enabled litigants to pursue their cases closer to home, saving considerable time, travel expenses and other associated costs. The initiative was appreciated as a practical step towards ensuring accessible and citizen-centric justice.

The successful conduct of the Circuit Sitting was facilitated through close coordination and logistical arrangements by the Housing & Protocol Department and the Department of Law and Justice, UT Ladakh. The arrangements were made under the overall supervision and guidance of Shri Qureshi Tariq Mahmood, Consultant/Secretary, Department of Law and Justice, with the coordinated efforts of officers and staff of the concerned departments.

The Hon’ble Members of the CAT appreciated the arrangements and coordination made by the concerned departments for the smooth conduct of the proceedings and for facilitating the participation of litigants, advocates and other stakeholders.

The Circuit Sitting at Leh marks another important step towards bridging the geographical gap between institutions of justice and the people of Ladakh. Such initiatives help reduce the financial and logistical burden on litigants while strengthening access to an efficient, affordable and citizen-centric justice delivery system.

The Department of Law and Justice, UT Ladakh, reiterated its commitment to extending necessary institutional and administrative support for facilitating the functioning of judicial and quasi-judicial institutions in the Union Territory and ensuring convenient and dignified access to justice for the people of Ladakh.
