| NIT Srinagar, UoK, leads national discourse on future healthcare technologies | | Experts call for interdisciplinary research to drive innovation in healthcare and diagnostics | Srinagar, June 03 (Scoop News)- The three-day IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) MGA Workshop – Advanced School of Antennas (ASA) 2026 on “Antennas in Biomedical and Biotelemetry Devices” concluded at the University of Kashmir.
It was jointly organized by the IEEE AP-S/CRFID Delhi Chapter and IEEE AP-S/MTT-S Kolkata Chapter in collaboration with National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar and the University of Kashmir.
Dr. Amit Kumar, SMIEE, NIT Srinagar, and Dr. Javaid Ahmad Sheikh, Associate Professor, UoK, were the conveners of the workshop.
The inaugural session was held at UoK. It was graced by the presence of Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia; Registrar UoK; Prof. Naseer Iqbal; Dean Academic Affairs UoK, Prof. Peerzada Sharief-ud-Din; Dean, School of Engineering, UoK Prof. M. Tariq Banday, and HoD, Dept. of Electronics & Instrumentation Technology, Dr. Farooq Khanday.
Prof. Omar M. Ramahi, IEEE Fellow, University of Waterloo, Canada, delivered a keynote address. He highlighted the important role of antenna technology in modern healthcare, particularly in wearable health-monitoring systems, implantable medical devices, wireless diagnostics, and new biomedical communication networks.
Prof. Ramahi encouraged young researchers to work on interdisciplinary ideas combining communication engineering, electronics, and healthcare sciences, calling it one of the most promising areas of research.
The second day of the workshop was hosted at NIT Srinagar, where participants attended a series of advanced technical sessions and interactive discussions.
The program was attended by Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, Dean R&C Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir, Registrar, Prof. Atikur Rehman, Prof. S. Javaid Ahmad Sheikh (Dept. of Electronics & Instrumentation Technology), and Dr. Amit Kumar (Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering).
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Kanaujia said biomedical antenna technology is rapidly emerging as a key enabler of future healthcare systems.
He noted that advancements in wireless communication, sensing technologies, and biomedical devices have immense potential to transform patient care, remote health monitoring, and precision medicine.
“NIT Srinagar remains committed to promoting research excellence, innovation, and global collaborations that contribute to meaningful societal impact. We encourage students, researchers, and young faculty members to actively engage in interdisciplinary research and make the best use of opportunities offered through professional societies such as IEEE,” he said.
Dean R&C, Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir, highlighted the importance of research and consultancy activities in driving technological advancement and urged participants to pursue research that addresses real-world challenges.
NIT’s Registrar, Prof. Atikur Rehman, appreciated the efforts of the organizers and stressed the need to foster a vibrant research ecosystem that encourages innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
A series of technical lectures was delivered by Prof. Omar M. Ramahi, who shared insights from his pioneering research. He discussed advanced biomedical antenna systems and innovative healthcare applications of electromagnetic technologies.
His presentation titled “Mammography using Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Energy: Is it Possible?” attracted considerable attention from participants.
The workshop also featured an expert lecture by Dr. Priyansha Kaurav, Assistant Professor at IIT Roorkee, who spoke on “Antenna Technologies for Terahertz Biomedical Sensing and Biotelemetry Systems.”
She highlighted the growing significance of terahertz-frequency antennas in non-invasive diagnostics, biomedical sensing, and future wireless medical communication systems.
Additional technical sessions were conducted by Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, and Dr. Vikrant Kaim, focusing on emerging trends in antenna design, wearable communication systems, biomedical telemetry, wireless sensing technologies, and future healthcare communication networks.
The valedictory function was held at UoK, and special gratitude was expressed to IEEE Fellow Prof. Debatosh Guha, Chairman IEEE MGA Society, and Prof. Mahesh Abegaonkar, IIT Delhi, for their presence.
Dr. Amit Kumar, Convener of the workshop, expressed gratitude to IEEE Fellow Omar Ramahi for his participation and valuable contribution to the event being held in Srinagar.
Dr. Kumar said the presence of Prof. Ramahi, a distinguished academic from the University of Waterloo, added great value to the programme.
He thanked all speakers, delegates, and participants for making the workshop a success and expressed hope that more such national and international academic events would be hosted in Srinagar in the future.
