| Police crack two theft cases in Uri; Accused arrested | | stolen property recovered | Srinagar, March 20 (Scoop News)-In a significant breakthrough, Police in Baramulla have successfully solved two theft cases in Uri involving a mobile shop burglary and a motorcycle theft, and arrested the accused from Humhama, Srinagar.
On 07/02/2026, Police Station Uri received a written complaint from Nasir Ahmed Chalkoo son of Abdul Gani Chalkoo resident of Uri stating that during the intervening night of 06/07 February 2026, unknown person(s) broke open the shutter of his mobile shop at Choudhary Complex, Uri and decamped with several mobile phones. Accordingly, FIR No. 12/2026 under relevant sections of law was registered and investigation was initiated.
On the following day, i.e., 08/02/2026, another complaint was lodged regarding the theft of a motorcycle bearing registration No. JK01AB-7296 from Nasir Ahmed Mir son of Riyaz Ahmed Mir resident of Sultan Dhaki, Uri. In this regard, FIR No. 13/2026 under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Uri and investigation was taken up.
During the course of investigation, a combination of CCTV footage analysis and technical evidence led to the identification of the accused as Mohd Safyan son of Mohammad Rafiq Beigh resident of Uri. Acting swiftly, Baramulla Police recovered five (05) stolen mobile phones from Delhi. On 10/03/2026, the accused was apprehended from Humhama, Srinagar, and the stolen motorcycle was also recovered from his possession. Subsequently, two (02) more stolen mobile phones were recovered and seized from Srinagar. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused is a habitual offender and is involved in multiple cases registered across various Police Stations in Jammu and Kashmir including FIR No. 03/2023 under Section 384 IPC at Police Station Rainawari, FIR No. 07/2025 under Sections 238, 305, 331(4) BNS at Police Station Nishat and FIR No. 06/2025 under Sections 305, 331(4) BNS at Police Station Sheergari.
Further investigation is underway to recover the remaining stolen property and to ascertain his involvement in other cases.
