DSTW, LRLM Celebrate International Women’s Day in Leh


Leh, March 08 (Scoop News)-The Department of Social and Tribal Welfare, UT Ladakh, in collaboration with the Ladakh Rural Livelihood Mission (LRLM), celebrated International Women’s Day at the DC Conference Hall, Leh.

The programme began with a welcome address by Deachen Angmo, who warmly welcomed the chief guests, officers, officials, and participants. She highlighted the importance of International Women’s Day and appreciated the role of women, especially Anganwadi workers and members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), in strengthening communities and supporting social welfare initiatives across Ladakh.

Speaking on the occasion, Director Social and Tribal Welfare, UT Ladakh, Smt. Kunzes Angmo (JKAS) congratulated all women and girls. She highlighted various government schemes and initiatives aimed at women’s empowerment, welfare of girls, and support for vulnerable sections of society. She encouraged women to support and uplift one another and to actively participate in government programmes meant for their development and welfare.

Addressing the gathering, District Social and Tribal Welfare Officer, Leh, Shri Mohd Safdar Bhat (JKAS) said that International Women’s Day is not just a day of celebration, but also a day for deep thought and reflection on the role and contribution of women in society. He appreciated the efforts of women in Ladakh who continue to play an important role in social development, community welfare, and strengthening local livelihoods. He also urged everyone to work together to create more opportunities and support systems for women and girls.

Ms. Jigmet Yangchan from the Self Help Group Sakhi Zamo Martselang shared her inspiring experience of making biodegradable sanitary napkins. Through this initiative, she and her group are not only contributing to better menstrual health and hygiene for women and girls, but are also creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local women.

Rigzin Yangdol from Khushi SHG – Charkha Ladakh Brand also shared her journey with great enthusiasm. She spoke about how being part of the SHG movement has transformed her life. Through the collective efforts of the group, she has not only been able to earn an income but has also gained opportunities and exposure which are equally important for her.

On this occasion members from Self Help Groups along with the Anganwadi workers were felicitated for their outstanding work and dedicated services for the community.

During the programme, a short local film titled “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” was screened to create awareness about the importance of protecting and educating the girl child. Participants also watched a live telecast of the address of the President of India on the occasion of International Women’s Day at Kartavya Path Delhi

The programme was attended by Director of Social and Tribal Welfare, UT Ladakh, Smt. Kunzes Angmo (JKAS), District Social and Tribal Welfare Officer, Leh, Shri Mohd Safdar Bhat (JKAS), CDPO Tsering Yutol along with officials of the department, LRLM representatives, members of SHGs, and Anganwadi workers.
