Security not defined by gender but by resolve: Balbir

Jammu, January 15 (Scoop News)-Jammu Kashmir BJP Spokesperson and former Vice Chairman, Balbir Ram Rattan, has strongly appreciated the role of Women Village Defence Guards (VDGs) in safeguarding remote and vulnerable villages of the Jammu region, stating that security is shaped by determination and courage, not by gender.

Balbir Ram Rattan said that during the winter months, many men from far-flung and hilly villages migrate to other parts of the country in search of livelihood. This seasonal migration often leaves villages exposed to security risks, especially in isolated areas with difficult terrain and limited connectivity. In such circumstances, the presence of women VDGs has emerged as a crucial protective shield for local communities.

Balbir Ram Rattan said that these women have stepped forward at a time when conditions are most challenging. Their resolve to protect their villages despite harsh weather and isolation proves that security is not defined by gender but by commitment and discipline.

He mentioned that Women Village Defence Guards are trained by security agencies and equipped with .303 rifles to enable them to effectively respond to any potential threat. After completing training, they are deployed in sensitive and remote areas, including forested and hilly regions where access becomes extremely difficult during winter due to snowfall and road blockages.

Balbir Ram Rattan noted that the women VDGs perform their duties with remarkable vigilance, often under extreme cold and limited resources. Their role becomes even more significant during winter when security response time is delayed and villages are more vulnerable.

Beyond physical security, Balbir highlighted the psychological impact of their presence. The women VDGs have instilled a strong sense of confidence among villagers, particularly the elderly, women, and children who remain behind. Knowing that trained members of their own community are guarding the villages has strengthened trust and social cohesion.

Calling the initiative a powerful step toward women empowerment also, Balbir said that assigning women the responsibility of village defence challenges traditional stereotypes. These women are not only safeguarding homes and lives but are also setting an example of leadership and self-reliance for future generations.

The silent vigilance of Women VDGs during Jammu’s long winters is a story of courage and patriotism, Balbir said, adding that their contribution deserves recognition and continued encouragement at all levels.
