| Mufti Mohd Sayeed had no match in Jammu & Kashmir politics:Mehbooba | | Srinagar, January 07 (Scoop News)- People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday remembered her father, former Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, on his 10th death anniversary, describing him as a leader with no parallel in Jammu and Kashmir and asserting that the region’s present difficulties stem from the failure to follow his vision.
Addressing party workers, Mehbooba Mufti said Mufti Sayeed believed in direct engagement with people and never pursued power for its own sake. “He went to every village. He never chased the chair, he chased the people. That is why he is remembered with respect even today,” she said.
She said Mufti Sayeed’s politics was rooted in outreach, reconciliation, and dignity. “If Mufti Sahib were alive today, Jammu and Kashmir would not be passing through this difficult phase. His absence is being felt across the region,” she said.
Taking aim at the present dispensation, the PDP chief alleged that orchards and trees were being cut in the name of development, causing distress among farmers.
She accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of not treating the issue with seriousness. “Almond trees and orchards are being cut, but the Chief Minister is not serious about it. From morning till evening, he only targets the PDP,” she said.
Mehbooba Mufti said her party poses no threat to the present government. “People have already given everything to him by giving more than 50 seats. The PDP is nowhere today,” she said.
Recalling her father’s political stature, Mehbooba Mufti said Mufti Sayeed commanded respect far beyond Jammu and Kashmir. “He had only 16 seats, yet the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approached him to discuss government formation. That respect came from his credibility and the trust he enjoyed,” she said.
She said Mufti Sayeed’s legacy was built on honour, dignity, and respect for the people. “He earned honour not just for himself but for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. That is why his name continues to resonate even today,” she added.
