Awantipora, December 23 (Scoop News)- Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) organised a two-day capacity building workshop on “Disaster Risk Reduction in Urban Planning, Development and Monitoring: Building a Disaster Resilient Jammu and Kashmir”, jointly conducted by the Department of Planning and Geomatics, the Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (CRR), and the Department of Architecture. The workshop was held in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (DMRRR), Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
The inaugural session was addressed by Prof. Ayaz Hassan Moon, Dean Academic Affairs, IUST, who emphasised the critical role of inter-institutional collaboration in effective disaster risk mitigation. He highlighted the active participation and commitment of IUST towards contributing to the vision of building a disaster-resilient Jammu and Kashmir.
Experts from different local and national institutions held technical sessions during the two days program. During one of the technical sessions by Mr. Raj Bhagat Palanichamy, (Senior Program Manager – Geo Analytics for Sustainable Cities and Transport, WRI India) on From Data to Decision: Harnessing Remote Sensing and GIS for Hazard Monitoring, Management, and Planning” he provided valuable insights into the application of remote sensing and GIS technologies for hazard monitoring, informed decision-making, and disaster preparedness.
Prof. Qazi Qamar Iqbal, Dean, School of Architecture and Planning, spoke on the importance of risk assessment in urban planning and development. He underscored the need for integrating disaster risk considerations into planning processes and facilitated the session in the presence of the chief guest.
The workshop aimed to enhance the understanding and capacity of academicians, professionals, and students with a special focus on disaster risk reduction strategies in urban planning, monitoring, and sustainable development. It also featured interactive question-and-answer sessions, enabling participants to engage with experts and gain practical clarity on disaster risk reduction tools and methodologies. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Irfan Maqbool, Coordinator, Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (CRR).
