Jammu, December 19 (Scoop News)-BJP spokesperson and former Vice Chairman, Balbir Ram Rattan, strongly advocated for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, asserting that such an exercise is essential to uphold the accuracy, transparency, and integrity of the electoral process.
He was addressing a workshop on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, organized by the Kashmir Displaced District of the BJP at Jammu, under Rajeev Pandita, KDD President, where Balbir participated as the key speaker. The BJP has undertaken countrywide awareness campaign to make public understand the importance of SIR and not fall prey to the false and misleading campaign launched by opposition parties on this electoral exercise.
Taking a strong dig at the opposition parties, Balbir Ram Rattan said they are deliberately misleading the nation on the issue of SIR. He asserted that their opposition to the Special Intensive Revision stems not from any genuine concern for democracy, but from their steadily degrading public standing and the rapidly rising graph of the BJP. Unable to counter the BJP politically, the opposition is resorting to creating unnecessary confusion and fear among voters, he said.
Balbir Ram Rattan said that free and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy, and accurate voter lists form the very foundation of this system. A ‘SIR’ of voter lists, he stressed, is necessary to ensure their credibility and reliability. Any compromise on the authenticity of electoral rolls directly undermines the credibility of elections and weakens democratic institutions.
He pointed out that intensive revisions help clear discrepancies such as duplicate entries, inclusion of ineligible voters, and exclusion of genuine voters. In addition, he emphasized that the SIR exercise would help in identifying and eliminating the names of infiltrators and other unauthorized individuals who may have found their way into voter lists.
Rattan said that migration, urban expansion, displacement, and changing population dynamics further contribute to voter lists becoming outdated over time, making a comprehensive and time-bound revision the need of the hour.
He also cautioned that inaccurate voter lists can lead to confusion on polling day and raise doubts in the minds of citizens about the fairness and transparency of elections. When eligible voters find their names missing or notice incorrect details, it discourages participation and weakens democratic engagement.
He appealed to all political parties to extend full cooperation and refrain from politicizing such a crucial democratic exercise. Clean and accurate voter lists serve the interests of democracy, not of any party. All stakeholders must work together to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process, he said.
KDD District President Rajeev Pandita, Prabhari Chandji Bhat, Seh Prabhari Hira Lal Bhat, General Secretaries Moti Lal, and Vimal Raina also expressed their views on the importance of SIR.
