| Hakeem Yaseen terms proposed 20% power tariff hike an unjust burden on people | | Srinagar, November 24 (Scoop News)-People’s Democratic Front (PDF) President Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, former Minister, has strongly criticized the proposal to increase electricity charges by 20 per cent during peak hours under the newly introduced Time of Day (ToD) tariff system, saying the move amounts to injustice and unfair treatment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir at a time of severe economic distress.
He said the ToD system—mandating higher charges during eight peak hours—may be a nation-wide policy, but the unique situation in Kashmir makes such decisions disproportionately harsh, especially before the harsh winter months when electricity usage naturally rises.
Yaseen said the region is already experiencing significant financial strain. Tourism, a major source of livelihood, has sharply declined following recent incidents including the Pahalgam attack and the blasts in Delhi and Nowgam.
“There is hardly any work available on the ground, and families are struggling. Imposing an additional 20 per cent surcharge now is deeply insensitive and unacceptable,” he said.
He recalled that people were promised 200 units of free electricity, but instead of relief, households are being burdened with extra charges. “This is a betrayal of public expectations and goes against the massive mandate given by the people,” he said.
Yaseen also expressed concern that Jammu and Kashmir’s own power projects have been handed over over the years, forcing the region to purchase electricity generated from its own natural resources.
“Our power feeds neighbouring states, while our own people suffer shortages and inflated bills. This is a longstanding injustice that must be acknowledged,” he added.
Describing the proposed tariff hike as oppressive and unfair, the PDF President urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to revoke the order immediately to prevent further hardship for the people as winter intensifies.
He said that governance must focus on easing public suffering, not adding to it. “The order should be withdrawn without delay to protect already distressed households and restore public confidence,” Hakeem added.
