EC Punchok Tashi Reviews Fertilizer Procurement Strategy with Cooperative Department Officials for Kargil District

Kargil, November 17 (Scoop News)-Executive Councillor for Cooperative, LAHDC Kargil, Er. Punchok Tashi today convened a meeting with officials of the Cooperative Department to review and streamline the procurement and distribution of fertilizers for the next agricultural season.

During the meeting, the Executive Councillor emphasized that LAHDC Kargil is committed to gradually reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and promoting organic farming across the district. He stated that an abrupt reduction in chemical inputs may negatively impact agricultural land and farmers; therefore, the transition will be implemented in a phased and farmer-friendly manner.

It was decided that for the current year, only 25% chemical fertilizer will be procured, while 75% of the requirement will be met through organic fertilizers. The Executive Councillor further suggested that if full transition is not immediately feasible, efforts should be made to ensure 75% organic fertilizer procurement.

The Executive Councillor stressed that adopting organic methods will not only improve soil health but also contribute to increasing farmers’ income in the long run. He also appreciated the Cooperative Department for their efforts and directed that local products be made available and promoted at all sale centres to encourage local entrepreneurship and value addition. He assured LAHDC’s full support in promoting organic alternatives.

The Cooperative Department official informed the meeting that fertilizer procurement is carried out exclusively through cooperative societies.
