| Pakistan’s Constitutional Amendment: Military Above the Nation | | by Farooq Ganderbali
Pakistan’s recent Constitutional Amendment has officially placed the military—and especially Field Marshal Asim Munir—above all civilian institutions. The amendment grants him lifelong authority, immunity, and complete control, making him the most powerful man in Pakistan with constitutional protection.
In a normal country, the army exists to protect the people. But in Pakistan, the people exist to protect the army. No elected leader or constitutional authority is above the General. Not even the President, the Chief Justice, or the Grand Mufti in a country that calls itself an Islamic Republic. The army chief stands higher than every institution, every law, and every leader.
Pakistan’s army is also widely regarded as one of the most corrupt and politically influential militaries in the world. It controls massive business empires, manipulates political parties, influences the judiciary, and directly shapes government decisions. Instead of strengthening democracy, the military has turned Pakistan into a state run by generals.
For decades, the Pakistani Army has created leaders, toppled governments, controlled the economy, and dictated national policy. Most dangerous is its long-standing practice of supporting and exporting terrorism as a strategic weapon.
This destructive approach has deeply harmed not only Pakistan but also the entire region. Terrorism in Kashmir has been directly encouraged and sponsored by the Pakistan Army. Thousands of innocent Kashmiris have lost their lives, crores worth of property has been destroyed, and the region’s economy has suffered severely due to Pakistan-backed violence.
The new Constitutional Amendment only tightens the army’s grip, pushing Pakistan further away from democracy and deeper into military dominance. Instead of serving the people, the army protects its own power, wealth, and influence.
As long as the military remains above the law, above the constitution, and above the people, Pakistan will remain unstable—and its dangerous policies will continue to impact its neighbours, especially Kashmir.
