CEC Kargil Attends District-Level Mela under National Livestock Mission at Sankoo


Kargil, November 10 (Scoop News)- Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd. Jaffer Akhoon today attended the inaugural ceremony of the District-Level Mela organized under the National Livestock Mission at Sankoo. The event was formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Akhoon thanked the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor for gracing the event and termed the Sankoo Subdivision as a deserving region to be declared a separate district. He stated that Sankoo fulfills all necessary criteria, including population and distance, and urged the Lieutenant Governor to take up the matter with the Government of India for declaring Sankoo as a new district, along with other recently announced districts.

The CEC also raised several key issues pertaining to the Sankoo Subdivision, including granting full-fledged status to Degree College Sankoo, approval for the Panikhar–Pahalgam Road, establishment of a Veterinary College in Sankoo, allocation of funds for the construction of livestock sheds, creation of a wool bank, procurement and distribution of sheep-shearing machines, establishment of a Joint Director post for the Animal and Sheep Husbandry Department in Kargil, and compensation for livestock lost due to stray dog attacks and other causes.

Dr. Akhoon expressed optimism that the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor would consider these demands favorably and ensure their early resolution for the welfare of the people of Sankoo.

Speaking on the occasion, Member of Parliament Ladakh, Shri Hanifa Jan, thanked the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor for attending the event and appreciated the efforts of the UT Administration in promoting the livestock and agriculture sectors. He noted that the people of Sankoo Subdivision largely depend on agriculture, horticulture, and livestock for their livelihood, and emphasized that the UT Administration should focus on these sectors through enhanced funding and special schemes.

The MP further urged concerned departments to educate the public about various Central Government schemes so that people can avail maximum benefits and become self-reliant. He also requested the Lieutenant Governor to allocate special funds for livestock development and to establish dedicated goat shelters in the area to protect animals during the summer season and from natural calamities.
