SJFI Demands 10 percent of DAVP ad funds for Social Security of Retired Journalists

New Delhi, November 09 (Scoop News)-The national executive committee of the Senior Journalists Federation of India has demanded the Central Government to set aside at least 10 percent of the newly revised DAVP advertisement expenditures for social security measures like a national pension scheme, welfare fund, etc, for retired journalists.

The DAVP advertisement rates are being revised by the Central Government by as much as 27 percent, though the retired journalists who served the profession for decades have received little attention from the managements or the government leaving them in penury and extreme hardship in their final days, the SJFI said in a resolution adopted at its national executive meeting earlier this week.

The meeting was attended by 19 members of the 28-member national executive committee. It was presided over by Sandeep Dikshit, SJFI president. Secretary general N P Chekkutty welcomed the gathering.

The committee was apprised of the discussions at the sub-committee for vetting of the SJFI constitution, presented by its convener C Gouridasan Nair. Several rounds of discussions had taken place at the sub-committee and based on it the draft was revised a number of times. Since the matter is of utmost importance, it was suggested to hold a meeting of the NEC exclusively to consider the final draft of the constitution.

The meeting considered the steps being taken to register the organization under Societies Act in the national capital of Delhi. G Bhupathi, NEC member, will will help president Sandeep Dikshit to carry out the initial activities for registration, including hiring of a place for its official address.

The meeting ratified the report from treasurer K P Vijayakumar about the fund collection drive and recorded its appreciation to all the members who have contributed. The drive was successful as ifs target was over-achieved much ahead of the schedule.

The meeting also noted the progress in the state level activities. A new unit has been formed in Bengal at a meeting of senior journalists in Kolkata Press Club. Another meeting is scheduled to be held in Bangalore later in November. A meeting of senior journalists was held in Guwahati, Assam, to launch a new unit.

The meeting discussed the possibility of holding the first meeting of the SJFI National Council at the national capital of Delhi, to ensure its nationwide reach, effectiveness and visibility. Some logistical issues and problems connected with availability of accommodation, extreme cold weather conditions in Delhi during winter/budget sessions of Parliament, etc, when the NC meeting is proposed to be held were highlighted. A final decision on the date, venue, etc, will be taken later.
