Wetland Authority organized a three-day workshop from 24th to 26th October in Leh

Leh, November 06 (Scoop News)-The Wetland Authority of UT Ladakh, organized a three-day workshop from 24th to 26th October in Leh on “Wetland Conservation and Management” which included a stakeholder consultation meeting on the first day followed by on field workshop for field staff on preparation of wetland brief documents and health cards, ground-truthing and demarcation of wetland boundaries.

The workshop commenced on 24th October with a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by Sh. Rajesh S. (IFS) Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF)/ Member Secretary, Wetland Authority of UT Ladakh at the DC Conference Hall, Leh. The meeting was attended by key stakeholders including representatives from the Indian Army and ITBP, along with other line departments such as Revenue Dept., Animal and Sheep Husbandry Dept., and Forest and Wildlife Division.



The stakeholders discussed the need to foster inter departmental coordination and collaboration in order to implement the Wetlands Conservation and Management Rules 2017, backed the prescribed actions such as the ground-truthing of wetlands in UT Ladakh as per the wetland inventory list.

The technical sessions were held at the Ladakh Pollution Control Committee (LPCC) Office, Leh, where resource personals from Wetlands International South Asia (A knowledge partner recommended by the MoEFCC, GoI) trained the field staff of the Wildlife and Forest divisions of Leh and Kargil.

The on-field sessions of the workshop were conducted at Guphuks wetland, where the participants were trained on various components required for the preparation of brief documents for notification such as water quality testing, demarcation of boundaries, other physical characteristics of the wetland as well as bird counting exercises as part of the practical component of the training. These exercises enhanced the capability of the field staff of the Forest and Wildlife divisions to accurately collect data on ground for various works.

The three-day workshop concluded on the third day with a comprehensive group exercise where each group prepared and presented their field data, draft brief documents and draft notification of wetlands.
