CGPWA celebrates International Day of Older Persons with Health Talks

Jammu,October 01 (Scoop News)-The Central Govt Pensioners’ Welfare Association, Jammu (CGPWA) in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Superspeciality Narayana Hospital celebrated this evening the 35th International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) with two Health Talks on ‘ Common Gastrointestinal Concerns” by Dr Vishav Dev Singh, Senior Consultant, and ‘Chronic Pain Management among elders’ by Parul Gohil, Consultant, Anesthesia & Pain Physician of Narayana Hospital, at IIPA auditorium here this evening.
Kuldeep Khoda, the President CGPWA presided over while Dr Ashok Bhan, Member, SMVDS Board was the Chief Guest.
Dr Vishav Dev Singh in his presentation, said that ageing causes physiological decline in the body leading to increased digestive issues, malnutrition and chronic diseases among elders. He listed main concerns about gastrointestinal tract which included dry mouth and altered protective gag reflex, Dysphagia, Dyspepsia and GEED delayed emptying food in stomach, decreased small bowel transit, risk of colorectal cancers, constipation and decreased appetite and weight loss. Referring to Esophageal Dysphagia, he said that food or liquid would get stuck in the throat, chest, reflux of food contents, and pain while swallowing food. At this stage, he advised, the elderly should consult the doctor. He cautioned the elders that dysphagia would cause dehydration, choking and aspiration & pneumonia. He advised elderly for thoroughly chew, maintain good dental health, eat slowly and sit upright while eating. He said that they should not ignore any type of abdominal pain as it could be early symptoms of gastric, hepatobiliary or intestinal cancer. It is essential to consult a doctor in case of onset of pain in the abdomen, he added.
Dr Vishav Dev also talked about liver changes in elderly and said that morphological and functional aging of the liver include reduction in liver weight, reduced blood flow to liver and loss of metabolic function of liver, adding that no liver disease is specific to old age. He said that liver function is more susceptible to liver injury by drugs or other causes of liver diseases.
He said that 35 % of elders above 65 years of age suffer from constipation and the reasons responsible for it included decreased mobility, dietary changes, inadequate water intake, cognitive impairment , diabetes, stroke, hypothyroidism, and organic causes. The elders must stay active, eat more fibrous food, drink more water, and use laxatives to deal with constipation. He recommended lifestyle changes and said that physical activity is recommended as it enhances bowel motility, stress management reduces gut disorder, and avoids excessive alcohol. His strategy for improving gut health comprised individualized diet planning, regular hydration, use of fiber supplements, appropriate probiotic usage and monitoring medication that affect gut health. He said that gut health is central to healthy aging and supporting gut health enhances quality in elderly.
Dr Parul Gohil, in her presentation, said that chronic pain severely affects the elderly by impairing physical functions, reducing mobility and increasing fall risk. It also impacts mental health, dealing to depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. She said that any pain persisting beyond 3 months and is persistent with negative effects. She said that effective management of chronic pain requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes use of analgesics combined with emotional, social and spiritual support.
Dr Parul said that there is limitation of medications and interventional treatment is essential for pain relief. It included steroid injections, nerve block, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation and plasma rich platelets. These can be used alongside medications. These interventions, she explained, included steroid injections to directly give anti-inflammatory medication to the affected area joints, spine; nerve block, radiofrequency ablation to disrupt nerve function with heat; spinal cord stimulation and plasma rich platelets by using patients own platelets to promote healing in affected tissues. It is a medical specialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating chronic or acute diseases using minimal invasive techniques. She said it is result oriented because these procedures target the source of the pain directly without going for surgical procedure.
Both these Talks were followed by a question answer session.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ashok Bhan recalled that some people had apprehension about the success of SMVD Shrine Board’s venture when the Hospital was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in 2014 but the collective efforts of the successive Governors & Lt Governors and doctors and staff of the Narayana Superspeciality Hospital have proved these wrong. He said neither the Shrine Board nor Dr Shetty has taken any share of the profit which has been pumped back into the Hospital. He also referred to the philanthropic attitude of Dr Shetty & the Shrine Board that despite accumulation of huge liabilities of the UT & Central Govt for the services rendered to Ayushman, CGHS & ECHS card holders, the management did not stop serving them. A Medical College has also come up in a record time of two years and the Medical Council of India has approved 50 seats in it.
On the celebration of the IDEP and the highly informative Health Talks by two eminent Consultants of Narayana Hospital, Dr Bhan said that today’s take aways are to consult competent doctors immediately in case elderly have any health issue and kill isolation by becoming active, not by sending whats app messages but talking and meeting friends.
Kuldeep Khoda, in his presidential address, complemented both the doctors for delivering educative talk on their specialised subjects which has benefitted the pensioners and other elderly. He also thanked the SMVD Narayana Hospital for rendering quality healthcare services in Jammu. He said that elderly must keep themselves physically fit with weight management by their positive attitude and active life of which physical exercise should be an integral part. He advised them to follow a balanced dietary chart with a light dinner and said that kam khao ghumh mat khao.
Both the Doctors were honoured with presentation of planters.
Earlier, the General Secretary CGPWA K B Jandial welcomed the guests and apprised them of the objective of the celebration of IDOP. The Vice President CGPWA Dr Sudarshan Kumar presented a formal vote of thanks. Nisar Ahmad conducted the proceedings.
Jandial announced that the SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital will hold a Health Camp at its OPD in Gandhinagar at 10 a.m. on 3rd October as part of the celebrations of IDOP.
