Srinagar, September 17 (Scoop News)-The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar officially launched the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 campaign on Wednesday as part of the nationwide cleanliness initiative inspired by Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB).
The inauguration, held near the Main Building fountain, was attended by In-Charge Director, Prof. Roohi Naaz, Registrar Prof. Atikur Rahman, Dean of Students Welfare Prof. Mohammad Abid Bazaz, Dean of Alumni and International Affairs Professor M.A. Shah, and Nodal Officer of SHS 2025 Dr. Ashok Kumar.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, staff, as well as NSS and NCC cadets, and EBSB volunteers.
A key highlight of the event was the Swachhata Pledge, in which participants committed to dedicating 100 hours per year, or two hours per week, to voluntary cleanliness activities.
They also vowed to actively promote cleanliness in their personal spaces, encourage at least 100 others to join the initiative, and refrain from littering while discouraging others from doing so.
Speaking at the event, In-charge Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Roohi Naaz, said cleanliness is not just a responsibility but a reflection of our commitment to nation-building.
"Our youth have the power to transform society through consistent action, and initiatives like SHS 2025 make that possible,” she said.
Institute Registrar Prof.Atikur Rahman highlighted the role of institutions in promoting civic responsibilities.
"Educational institutions are key to instilling habits that extend beyond classrooms. By participating in SHS 2025, students and staff set examples for their families and communities,” he said.
DSW, Prof. Mohammad Abid Bazaz said that SHS 2025 is more than a campaign; it’s a platform for students to engage, innovate, and lead by example.
“From organizing campus clean-ups to spreading awareness in local communities, students can see the impact of their efforts firsthand. Such experiences build civic-minded individuals who understand the importance of sustained social responsibility,” he said.
Dean AIA, Prof. M.A. Shah said cleanliness is not just about removing waste; it’s about creating an environment where healthy habits and community values thrive.
“Through SHS 2025, we are encouraging students, faculty, and staff to embed cleanliness into daily life, ensuring that it becomes a core part of campus culture and community consciousness,” he added.
Dr. Ashok Kumar, Nodal Officer for SHS 2025, highlighted the practical objectives of the campaign.
“The goal of this initiative is to translate awareness into tangible action. Every participant taking the pledge strengthens the culture of cleanliness and responsibility,” he said.
Dr. Ashok further added that the campaign aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, emphasizing active citizenship and community engagement.
The campaign, led by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) and the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), focuses on transforming neglected public spaces, including garbage dumps, railway stations, back lanes, and villages.
The nationwide campaign began from 17 September to 2 October, and people across the country will pitch in to clean up dark spots, reduce plastic waste, and make the festive season greener.
During the 15-day campaign, multiple initiatives will be held at NIT Srinagar. Students and staff will participate in cleanup drives in hostels, laboratories, academic blocks, and public areas, coupled with awareness sessions on waste segregation and sustainable practices.
