Geelani laments alarming menace of drug abuse in Valley
lauds role of religious scholars and clerics for educating youth through their sermons


Srinagar, July 18, (Scoop News)-Expressing distress over growing menace of drug abuse by Kashmiri youth, the separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, lamented that Kashmir was facing a unique monster of drugs.
“The pest is running deep in the society and threatening our existence,” he said in a statement issued by his faction, Tehreek e Hurriyat (TeH).
Geelani is the second separatist leader after Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to raise the voice against the increasing drug abuse in the Valley.
He said health experts and groups monitoring the problem disclosed horrifying details about its gravity that no sane person would like to believe in. “Over 6,000 addicts are added every year which includes good number of teenage girls, is enough to wipe out any social fabric and also affect society as whole,” Geelani stated.
The separatist leader said that those involved in this menace have a strong network and are capable of penetrating into the core of the society that would destroy our culture, identity and social system.
Lauding the role of religious scholars, clerics and preachers, Geelani said this endemic had to be obliterated by addressing it at domestic, mohalla, village, tehsil, district and at the state level.
The separatist leader exhorted that parents have an immense responsibility to keep an eye on their children, their extracurricular and their outdoor activities. ...
