CITU held protest demonstrations on the eve of two days

Srinagar, January 08 (Scoop News)- As a part of country wide general strike call on 8,9 January, different protest demonstration were held under the banner of CITU at Budgam, Pattan, Baramulla,Shopian,Anantnag, Kulgam, Kupwara, Bandipora, Manasabal, Ganderbal, Hindwara in support of charter of demands including urgent measures for containing price-rise, containing unemployment through concrete measures, strict enforcement of all basic labour laws and stringent punitive measures for violation of labour laws, universal social security cover for all workers, minimum wages of not less than Rs 18,000/- per month with provisions of indexation, stoppage of disinvestment in Central/State PSUs and strategic sale, stoppage of contractorisation in permanent perennial work and payment of same wage and benefits for contract workers as regular workers for same and similar work.

The protesters expressed their concern over problems being faced by the working class. The two days’ strike is part of the continuous struggle against the anti-worker and anti-people neoliberal policies of the BJP led government. The present which government pro-corporate is reversing the hard earned rights of the laour unions.

They were protesting against the apathy of the government towards the working class and said that the state government is not serious about implementing the labour laws in letter and spirit; with the result a large number of workers and labourers do not receive the financial support and other due benefits by the J&K Labour Department and Building and other Constructional Workers welfare board.
The process of registration has been made tedious and some workers are waiting for registration for over two years. Similarly the benefits like scholarship to children, marriage assistance to sons and daughters and financial support cases in the event of death and chronic disease of a labourer are pending for a very long time. Registration process should be simplified, along with online system, the registration forms should be accepted manually as well. All the pending cases of financial assistance should be processed in right earnest and there should be no delay on any excuse.
They demanded that SRO 105 that deprives livelihood to hundreds of labourers associated with quarrying and construction business be made pro-worker.
