| Gurj Division organises a marathon at Samba to show solidarity with disabled soldiers and promote physical fitness | |
Samba, November 7, (Scoop News)-The Indian Army is observing the year 2018 as the ‘Year of Disabled Soldier’ to honour soldiers who have been disabled in line of duty while serving the nation and to celebrate the undying spirit of ‘soldiering’. A Marathon was organised at Samba by the Gurj Division on Sunday to show solidarity with disabled soldiers and promote physical fitness.
The marathon was flagged off by Mrs Revati Narayanan, Chairperson FWO, Gurj Division. A large No of school children, civilians and soldiers from Army,BSF, ITBP and Police personnel participated in the event. It was organised in four categories i.e. a Half Marathon of 21.1 Km, Combat Run of 12 Km, Mini Marathon of 10 Km and Introductory Run of 5 Km.
The winners in each category were:- (a). 21.1 Km Half Marathon (Male) - Hav Dinesh Kumar of 8 Dogra and (Female) - Smt Mandeep Kour. (b). 12 Km Combat Run - Gunner Mandeep of 92 Fd Regt. (In Civilians) - Mr Rohit of Degree College, Samba. (c) 10 Km Mini Marathon Run (Male). - Mr Kulwinder Singh of Punjab Police and (Female) - Mrs Yogita Malik W/o Lt Col Amit Malik.(d). 5 Km Intro Run (Male) - Naik Mandeep of 6 Sikh. (Female)- Mrs Sudha Singh of ITBP. (in College students) - Mr Sunil Kumar. and (In school Students) - Saurav of APS, Samba.
Apart from the enthusiastic runners, the Marathon was also attended by Disabled Soldiers and a large number of Ex-servicemen from the border districts of Samba and Kathua.
The local veterans, public and youth applauded the efforts of the Army in organising the Marathon. The Samba Marathon depicted the bonding & camaraderie between the Army & civil population towards disabled soldiers who have made great sacrifices for India.
