Lack of infrastructure like ice rink a major concern | young boys and girls attend coaching sessions in ice hockey and other related events on frozen natural water bodies |
Leh(Ladakh), January 16, (Scoop News)-In the absence of infrastructure like ice rinks, dozens of young boys and girls assemble everyday on frozen water ponds across the district where they are being imparted special coaching sessions in ice hockey, ice skating, speed ice skating, figure skating and other allied events.
Free coaching in remote areas is a part to popularize the sports among the children for which the money is being generated through the community contributions. The arrangements, in this regard, are being made by Ladakh Winter Sports Club (LWSC) and Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council (JKSCC). The dearth of infrastructure is a major concern for all those who are associated with the sport.
The favourable weather conditions and topography provides sufficient prospects for the sports to grow and flourish on professional lines in the region.
Surprisingly, the national teams who had participated in the international events were constituted with majority of the players from Ladakh region. In 2008 and 2016, the national teams of both men and women took part in the international events respectively.
India’s women team finished fourth in an international fixture when it trounced both Malaysia and Philippines during an ‘Ice Hockey Women’s Challenge Cup’ in Bangkok and registered its presence at global level. Incidentally, majority of the women players belong to region.
Similarly, an U-20 boys team was sponsored by LWSC to represent the country in Malaysia in 2017.... |
