Legal Aid Clinic Inaugurated at Department of Law, University of Jammu

Jammu, November 16, (Scoop News)-Legal Aid Clinic was inaugurated at the Department of Law, University of Jammu. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Sh. Vinod Chatterji Koul, Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Jammu. Mr. Chatterjee said that this endeavour is in compliance to the directions issued by National Legal Services Authoritiy and the said clinic shall be manned by Retainer Lawyer and para legal volunteers amongst the students duly appointed by the DLSA, Jammu. Legal Aid Clinics are intended to provide legal relief accessible to the needy and backward section of our society and the thrust is on the basic legal services like legal advice and assisting in drafting of notices, replies, applications, petitions, etc. The Gust of honour n this occasion was Mr. Slahuddin Ahmed, Additional Mobile Magistrate (Traffic), Jammu.
On this occasion an awareness programme on ‘Drug Abuse and Its Eradication’ was organized. Resource Persons from the Department of Excise, J&K Government apprised the students regarding the menace of drug and ways and means for its eradication through awareness. The students of the Department of Law, viz., Deepak Kumar, Aakushi Gupta, Arti Thakur and Abhaydeep Bali also presented their views about the topic. Later, Mr. Slahudin Ahmed, additional Mobile Magsitrate held an interative session and cleared doubts of students regarding implementation of NDPS Act in the state.
Earlier, Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Head, Department of Law while welcoming the dignitaries said that legal aid clinic have a vital function to perform as they help to resolve the disputes of people in the locality and prevent the disputes from maturing into litigation. He assured that Legal Aid Clinic shall work as single-window facility for helping the disadvantageous people to solve their problems where the operation of law comes into picture.
