Babar Afzal, invited by Woodstock School, Mussoorie to engage with International Students on Pashmina

Mussoorie, November 16, (Scoop News)-Babar who left a cushy Silicon Valley career to highlight complex issues concerning pashmina eco-systems which include climate change leading to the displacement of nomadic and weaver communities, preserving the diminishing species of the delicate pashmina goats, fight against exploitation by traders and middle-men, prevention of demoralization and depression among artisans, and introduce healthcare and education in the community, build a strong case for a Make in India Luxury Product was a special guest invited to interacted with the students of Woodstock school, Mussoorie which is the oldest boarding school of Asia known for alumni like the founder of TED, Chris Anderson, Tom Alter and James Taylor.
Babar held multiple powerful engaging sessions with the international groups of students and shared his inspirational work, life and journey of understanding the authentic pashmina eco system of India and it’s linkages with art, culture, heritage, ecology, economy, environment and tourism. Babar also presented his book “6 Times Thinner, the call of Pashmina” to the headmaster Dr Jonathan Long and other faculty members who shoed keein interest in the “Pashmina Goat Project” and the opportunities for students to intern with him in various fields of research.
A recognised Pashmina activist in India and Internationally, Babar has shared platforms with prodigies like Thor Bjorgolfsson, Mustafa Suleyman and Taavet Hinrikus showcasing his art, highlighting core issues of pashmina, the environmental hazards of climate change in the Himalayan region of Leh-Ladakh, Bahsoli and Kashmir and the threats of fake pashmina being smuggled into India. “There is a great demand for luxury products globally. And with the Make in India campaign, we see that pashmina as the only true luxury product of India,” he adds. Babar quit his comfortable Silicon Valley career as a Technology Analyst, Business Consultant and Information Security Architect and highlights the issues linked to the Pashmina Eco-System of India. Over the years he held several impactful conferences, dismantled pashmina nexus, served legal notices to over 150 fake pashmina dealers and challenged Indian corporate honchos for airing misleading adverts on pashmina. His work won him five National Awards, including the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Excellence, Dr B R Ambedkar Award, Shri. Rabindranath Tagore Award, Karmaveer Chakra (UN) and Bharat Gaurav Awards. He has also been profiled by the TIME magazine in “the Genius Issue”, BBC, CNN, Bloomberg Global and many more for using art and many other creative ways to reposition pashmina onto the global platform. Babar is a TED Residency, finalist NY, WIRED Innovation Fellow UK, REX Global Fellow and a four times TEDx Speaker. He is working on building the largest Authentic Pashmina Social Enterprise in the world.
