LAHDC to provide suitable market for the local artisans

Leh, March 20, (Scoop News)-The LAHDC, Leh in an effort to provide suitable market for the local artisans and to promote local arts, crafts, food and music during tourist season, decided to hold a weekly market at main Bazar Leh on every Sunday starting from 14th May, 2017. The main aim and purpose of holding such weekly market by creating a festive ambiance is to attract tourists and give local artisans a better platform to showcase traditional arts, craft and food among the tourists.

The decision was take in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo today at Council Secretariat. Among others who attended the meeting was Executive Councilor for Works Dorjey Mutup and district level officers headed by Deputy Commissioner, Leh P. Ramaswamy G and representative of ALTOA.

Considering all the innovative ideas of officers to make the weekly market eye-catching in every respect, the meeting decided to start the initiative with 30 Stalls and decided to allot ten stalls to Leh area and five stalls each to Nubra, Changthang and Khaltsi area initially. To make the proposal self sustain the meeting also decided to charge fee from applicants and only local products (made in Ladakh) will be allowed in the market. Besides providing stalls for Handloom, Handicraft and Sheep Husbandry departments, the meeting also decided to allot one stall for ALTOA to give tourist information. It was also decided to allot one stall free for PAGIR. To attract tourists, traditional and modern cultural shows will be organized by engaging Cultural Academy, LTO, villages, students and artists from outside. Moreover, ALTOA will arrange exhibition of art and photo during the weekly market.

To ensure timely arrangement of all the logistic supports, DC Leh constituted a five member committee headed by Administrator MC Leh Dr. Zaida and made the committee responsible for inviting applications from interested SHGs and artisans and selection of deserving traders as per the quality of their products and also authorized to ensure quality of local food through Food Inspectors during the weekly market. DC Leh also directed Dr. Zaida for earliest procurement of 30 Tents to be used as stalls through Cooperative Dept. and assigned DSWO, Leh Rigzin Spalgon to prepare the design of tent as per the Ladakhi and Tibetan design.
