Chinar corps celebrates infantry day
Mohd Maqbool Sherwani remembered

Srinagar, October 27, (Scoop News)- The Army today celebrated its 69th Infantry Day with traditional solemnity. Rich tributes were paid to the martyrs on this occasion by Chinar Corps at Badami Bagh Cantt, Srinagar and in other parts of Kashmir.
While this day celebrates the valour and sacrifice of the Infantry soldier and inspires the entire nation, it also holds a special significance for the Chinar Corps and the state of J&K as it was on 27 Oct 1947 that the first column of Infantry, The First Battalion of the SIKH Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar, to save Kashmir from the Pak abetted tribal raiders.
The decision to induct the Indian Army in to the J&K state was taken immediately after the signing of “Treaty of Accession” on 26 Oct 1947. The delay imposed on the Pak marauders by the J&K State Forces led by Brig Rajinder Singh whose martyrdom day is celebrated on 26 Oct, proved crucial as it gave time to the Army to organise its defences and prevent the invaders from taking over Srinagar.
In subsequent actions the Pak invaders were repulsed from Kashmir thus thwarting Pakistan’s nefarious designs and since the entire campaign was predominantly Infantry centric, its commencement on 27 Oct 1947 is commemorated as the ‘Infantry Day’.
Regarded as the “Queen of the Battle”, the Infantry is the largest fighting Arm of the Indian Army and its units are being regularly modernised to meet all contemporary and emerging security challenges.
Paying homage to the sacrifice of valiant soldiers, Lt Gen Satish Dua, Chinar Corps Commander said that real tribute to these martyrs would be to remain committed to the cause for which they had laid down their lives. He said that it was also a day for the Chinar Corps to rededicate itself to the wellbeing of the people of Kashmir.
