Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul emerging as a centre of excellence
Shastri classes to start next year


Katra, June 17, (Scoop News)-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul, established by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board at Charan Paduka, Katra, in July 2010, is a unique institution which aims to promote Sanskrit language and literature.

The Gurukul is imparting quality education to the students in Vedas, Karamkand and Pooja rituals besides teaching to them English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Computer Sciences and Music.

Governor N. N. Vohra, who is the Chairman of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, has been taking keen interest in the development of the Gurukul on a sound footing and to make it a centre of excellence.

With efforts of the Governor, the Gurukul was affiliated to the Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Varanasi, a leading Sanskrit University of the country, which has granted permanent affiliation to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul, upto the Acharya (Post-Graduation) level.

Giving details, A. K. Sahu, chief executive officer of the Shrine Board informed that 20 students are admitted to class 6th in this fully residential Gurukul every year after conducting entrance test in January-March. Presently, 136 students are studying in the class 6th to 11th in the Gurukul who are being provided free boarding, lodging, tuition, books, uniforms facilities by the Shrine Board. The Gurukul has highly qualified Acharyas for imparting education to the students.

The Shrine Board also provides free coaching to the students hailing from Purana Daroor/erstwhile Baridar areas and the children of employees of the Shrine Board in December every year for preparing them to appear in the entrance test, who are desirous to seek admission to the Gurukul.

The Governor has been guiding and advising the future growth and development of the Gurukul, while the day to day functioning of this institution is closely watched by the Governing Council under the chairmanship of Dr. S. S. Bloeria, Member, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

The Council comprises eminent persons including Prof. Y. K. Mishra, former Vice Chancellor, J.R. Rajasthan Sanskrit University, Jaipur; Prof. Vishwamurti Shastri, former Principal Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Jammu, and officers of the Shrine Board.

The outstanding performance of the students has been bringing laurels to the Gurukul. It is pertinent to mention that the students of this institution have secured the first position in the entire University in 8th class examinations held in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and have been awarded Gold Medals by the Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyala.

The Gurukul is fully equipped with a hi-tech language lab having facilities of LCDs, computer systems, required software etc. for teaching of Sanskrit, Hindi and English. The Gurukul also has a computer lab, labs for sciences and a well stocked library.

The Shrine Board has also made elaborate arrangements for indoor and outdoor games at the Gurukul for all round personality development of the students. These include table tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton and cricket. Besides sports, debating competitions are also organised for the students of the Gurukul.

Last year, Master Gourav Sharma, a student of 11th class of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul had won a Gold Medal and a cash award of Rs. 10,000/- at the national level Jyotish Shilakha Pariksha at 54th All India Sanskrit Shastric Contest organized by Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, at Sri Venkateswara Vedic University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

As per its mandate, the Gurukul has also been regularly organising workshops for providing refresher training to the Pujaris from the entire region. This training is provided free of cost and aims to enable the Pujaris to improve their knowledge and understanding of the rituals and religious practices. The Gurukul has so far organised 30 such refresher courses, while 4 refresher courses are being organised during this year.

The Board has constructed the Gurukul campus, comprising Academic block, Hostel block, accommodation for Acharyas, Temple, Yagyashalla, Bhojanalaya, Prayer Hall and other facilities at a cost of over Rs. 6.45 crore.

The Shrine Board has decided to upgrade the Gurukul by making arrangements for imparting teaching upto Shastri level i.e. Graduation, for which the classes will be started in the 2017-18 Session. For this purpose, additional infrastructure comprising a Hostel block for the students, Acharya Block for the Faculty, Temple and a Yagyashalla are being constructed with an estimated cost of Rs. 11.97 crore.

Besides, a Solar Water Heating Plant of 8,000 LPD capacity and Solar Power Plant of 20 KW have also been installed in the Gurukul at an expenditure of Rs. 69.58 lakh.
