Ladakh floods:Scores of structures washed away, road connectivity snapped with several villages
schools closed


Leh, (Ladakh), August 5, (Scoop news)-Scores of structures, including houses, cowsheds, schools were washed away forcing people to flee for safety in low lying areas following heavy rainfall in entire Leh district, reports reaching in Jammu on Wednesday said.
“One person in Turtuk area was reportedly washed away and many more causalities feared. Hundreds of tourists held up in Nubra and Pongong Lake, mobiles and landlines not functioning, Leh- Srinagar and Leh- Manali highways blocked at several places”, said a text message from Leh.
It further said link with all remote villages snapped as most of the roads and foot bridges were washed away by the flash floods. “Residential houses in several villages around Thicksey and Chushot filled with slush and covered with mudslides”, the message said
Classes up to 10th standard in all schools were ordered to remain closed till further orders, the message added.
Speaking to Scoop News, president District Congress Committee, Tsering Samphel , castigated state administration for maintaining eerie silence over the tragedy.
“Not a single state minister or a top bureaucrat visited us to see our miseries and the problems we are facing here”, he fumed.
“There is an extreme shortage of mineral water, edibles and medicines in the town, at least the authorities could have arranged to airlift it from Srinagar or Jammu for our consumption”, Samphel said adding “the union and state governments must immediately come forward and provide necessary assistance to the people of Leh”.
Samphel recounted the quick response of previous UPA government in 2010 flash floods when several leaders including President of India, Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and the chief minister by visiting the place.
He said entire district was hit by heavy rainfall during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday resulting in spate and flooding in streams and canals causing unprecedented damage to both official and civil infrastructure.
Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Chief Executive Councilor (CEC), Rigzin Spalbar, along with his team sought army help in rescue and rehabilitation works as and when required. He said they (army) have been requested to provide machines like dozers and JCB’s besides temporary bridges to district administration to restore connectivity with the cut off villages.
Spalbar expressed dismay and distress over the state governments indifferent attitude and failure to sanction funds for temporary restoration works till date notwithstanding several representations for immediate release of funds.
