Bukhari concerned over ration scarcity, pesky power situation
Solicits Governor’s attention towards these grave issues

Srinagar, January 19, (Scoop News)-Expressing serious concern over scarcity of ration and precarious power situation across Kashmir valley, Syed Altaf Bukhari Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senior leader and the MLA Elect has said the administration must come out of deep slumber and infuse responsiveness and an element of accountability in its machinery in order to mitigate the sufferings of people.
In a statement issued here today, Bukhari said that there is scarcity of ration especially rice, flour and sugar in government depots across Kashmir especially in Srinagar that has been the worst hit district during September floods. “The stock review meetings convened by the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) has become a ritual and the department must come out from desk work and check the ground realities. Ration is not available in government run depots. People across Kashmir valley are complaining about shortage of essential commodities like rice, flour, sugar and kerosene,” Bukhari observed.
He said that the complaints about curtailment in normal ration quota galore from across the valley especially in Amirakadal constituency of district Srinagar. “Not to talk of distribution of free ration as was announced by the previous government for the flood affected families, the people here complain that they return from the depots without any rations,” Bukhari added. The PDP senior leader stressed on the administration to take notice of the fact that most of the families have loss ration cards in the September floods and there is a dire need of coordination between the revenue department and the CAPD to ensure that free ration for six months meant for the flood affected families reaches to them without any procedural delay.
“Many families have lost their ration cards in the devastating floods. The CAPD can distribute the free ration to such families on their identification by the local Mohalla and Masjid committees,” Bukhari remarked, while stressing on the CAPD to ensure adequate ration supplies especially rice, flour and sugar in government run depots across his constituency without any delay. The MLA Elect said that the CAPD must also distribute the ration on the basis of latest census and ensure that enhanced ration quota in favour of the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families reach them without any hassles.
The MLA Elect sought intervention of the Governor N N Vohra for addressing the scarcity of ration in Kashmir by taking up the issue with the union public distribution ministry. “There is a dire need for an intervention from his Excellency’s office for mitigating the sufferings of people who are craving for supplies of ration across the Valley,” Bukhari pleaded while inviting Governor’s attention. He suggested that Honb’le Governor’s office must project the food requirements of the population that has increased and is reflected in the 2011 census.
Referring to the precarious power situation in Kashmir, Bukhari said the pesky power cuts are giving a tough time to the people of Kashmir especially the inhabitants of the city and in flood affected Amirakadal to brave the biting cold. “The unscheduled power cuts in areas both metered and unmetered are a cause of major concern as there is hardly any alternative arrangements available to the flood affected families for cooking and keeping themselves warm, in this winter,” Bukhari said while stressing on the Power Development Department to ensure smooth supply of electricity in the city especially in the flood hit Amirakadal.
“In absence of electricity supply or due to extremely low voltage, most of the flood hit areas in Amirakadal constituency give a semblance of ghost localities,” Bukhari observed while stressing on the PDD authorities to address the grievances of people who are suffering for want of electricity transformers, electricity poles, LT conductor wires, and other allied issues.
Bukhari also expressed concern over complaints about non adherence of power schedule by the PDD. “There are complaints that no power schedule is being followed on ground and even metered areas are facing long and unscheduled power cuts much to the miseries of general public. Similarly the faulty LT wires need to be replaced immediately and the transformers across Kashmir valley especially in Amirakadal constituency that have developed technical snags must be repaired in a time bound manner. The PDD must also make a detailed study for augmentation of electricity transformers wherever needed and go for installation of additional transformers without any further delay,” he demanded.
