GNRD Urges EU Leaders to take action following massive attacks against Journalists in Kiev
Brussels, January 24 (Scoop News International Monitoring Desk)_ On behalf on the humanitarian community, and particularly in support of the right of peaceful protest and freedom of expression, both enshrined in international law, Global Network for Rights and Development (GNRD) denounces in the strongest possible terms the actions of both the Ukrainian government and its security services – which have served to show their complete disregard of the democratic and human rights of its citizens, including both protestors and journalists.

The 22nd of January is Ukraine’s Day of National Unity. Sadly, rather than honoring the spirit of this day, and the country’s proud history of peaceful protest, the Ukrainian authorities have attacked its own citizens, in violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights and, in its attacks on journalists, Article 19 of the Universal Declaration on Human rights.

We utterly condemn the murder today of three individuals, and note with particular concern that the Ukrainian police has admitted that two of these deaths were caused by the firing of live rounds at protestors.GNRD notes with alarm that these deaths mark a significant escalation in the level of violence aimed at both those protesting against the Ukrainian government and those who are working to report on the situation.

GNRD had been made aware of footage showing police beating and kicking protestors, and recalls that similar footage emerged during December 2013, at which time over 20 journalists reported being beaten and having their equipment damaged by security forces.

A number of these journalists were also detained.GNRD also recognizes the work being done by various individuals and institutions within Ukraine to try to calm the situation, and appeals to the European community to fully support such
actionsWe reiterate the statement of Jose Manuel Barroso’s, president of the European commission, which states that it is ‘the fundamental responsibility of the Ukrainian government to de-escalate this crisis and, in particular,
the need for them to engage in genuine dialogue with the opposition and with civil society…’ and call for the Government of Ukraine, led by President Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Mykola Azaro, on honour this responsibility.

GNRD calls for the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Europe to denounce the reported actions of the Government of Ukraine, which are in violation of both international and Ukrainian law, and to seek the strongest possible sanctions for those that taken part in today’s atrocities, as well as advocating for a peaceful resolution to the situation.
