Disaster preparedness skills soon be made compulsory in schools: ADC
Srinagar, May 11 (Scoop News) –Additional DC and CEO District Disaster Management Authority, Srinagar Nazim Zai Khan announced that life saving skills including first aid, fire-fighting, search & rescue shall soon be made compulsory in all schools. He was speaking at a disaster preparedness training function organised by Civil Defence at Govt. Girls Secondary School, Pandrethan, Srinagar.

He stressed on the necessity to learn about safety measures required to be taken in the event of human-induced and natural disasters, especially earthquakes, as Srinagar falls in Seismic Zone-V. He urged school children to learn and spread the message of safety amongst their friends and relatives. Speaking on the occasion; SP City West, Srinagar, Dr. Sunil Gupta stressed on the need to learn such trainings. He informed the students that their help would be sought, on completion of their training, for assisting the department in management of traffic in the area, as well as during important events, like Yatra.

He suggested that disaster preparedness should be incorporated as part of the syllabus of teachers training, so that they learn and disseminate the knowledge to the students. He also distributed sweets amongst the school children. Chief Education Officer Srinagar Nazir Ahmed assured that teachers in each school would be taught disaster preparedness skills so that they impart the training to students. He informed that all steps including structural and non-structural measures would be taken by the department to ensure that schools are made earthquake-resistant. Earlier CD trainers Shabir Ahmed Pala, Ghulam Nabi and Mohammed Hussain imparted search and rescue training. Dy. Director Fire Mohammed Akbar gave a power point presentation about common causes of fire and its prevention.
The function was attended by Joint Director Fire Services Kashmir, RT Dubey, Secretary J&K State Social Welfare Board Gazanfar Ali, Dy. Chief Warden Aamir Ali, AEE R&B 1st, Headmaster Govt Middle School, Neelofar Jan, SHO Panthachowk Mohammed Aslam, JE EM&RE and Riyaz Hussain President Local Mohalla Committee, Pandrethan. Principal Govt. Girls Secondary School, Shahzada Ahmed Shah welcomed the guests, while Miss Anjali Raina presented vote of thanks. Jatinder Singh from Ceasefire donated two multi-purpose fire extinguishers to the school, while Sartaj Parray demonstrated the use of gas safety device. The programme was facilitated by Shabir Ahmed Khan ASI(M) I/c Dy. Controller, SI(M) Nazir Ahmed, Naseer Ahmed, ASI Mohammed Afzal, Ghulam Rasool. On the occasion Fire Services and SDRF demonstrated various rescue equipments available with the department and held a mock drill, as well.
