| People of Jammu mourn the death of the Delhi’s 23 Year old medical student | | Student's death stirs anger |  Jammu, December 29 (Scoop News) –Protests across the country to mourn the death of the 23-year-old medical student who died in a Singapore hospital early this morning.
In Jammu emotions ran high as the news of the tragic end of the Delhi gang-rape victim with people, particularly women, demanding stringent punishment including death penalty, for the perpetrators of the crime.
Girls took out a protest march and mourned the death. Students of women colleges were in tears while expressing their ire over the rape. They demanded capital punishment for the rape accused while others sought justice. Many carried placards highlighting the lack of safety for women.
The para-medical student, who was gang-raped and brutally assaulted by six men in a moving bus on December 16, died at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore where she was airlifted on Wednesday night.
Her condition took a turn for the worse last night and she died in the wee hours today due to multiple organ failure.
Meanwhile various organizations including Jammu Province People Forum (JPPF), S. O. S. International, Jammu &Kashmir Samaj Sudhar committee, Vichar Kranti Manch ,Panun Kashmir ,BJP Mahila wing,NC,Women wing ,PDP Mahila wing, Shri Ram Sena,Shiv Sena,AIKS,ASKPC,Vichar Manch condoled Delhi rape victim’s demise.
Jammu Province People Forum observed two minutes silence with prayer to Almighty to bestow peace to the departed soul and courage to the bereaved parents and family members to bear the irreparable loss. The prayers was attended by Paviter Singh Bhardwaj, Rajiv Mahajan (Shri Ram Sena, state president), Inderjeet Khajuria, Kr. Narayan Singh, MS Katoch, ML Sharma, S Gajan Singh Khajuria, Avinash Bhatia, Amrit Magotra, Prof. B.L. Bhardwaj, S. Gajan Singh Khalsa, Sunita Sharma, and Pushpinder Singh and Partap Singh.
Rajeev Chuni, Chairman S. O. S. International had expressed his deep shock over the death of Delhi gang rape victim at Singapore after struggling for life for more than 13 days. He urged the people of India not to forget the agony and pain of the rape victim and press the government for evolving a fool proof mechanism so that such like incidents are not repeated again.
In a statement Mr. Chuni said all these days while she survived after rape she conveyed to the Indian people at every moment to wake up and make such environment in the country especially in the capital where woman folk can live fearless and dignified life. He said that the torment of the rape victim struck the conscience of the people across the country who took to streets against the apathetic attitude of the state and central governments in making the streets safe for common female.
Mr. Chuni said that in a Male dominated society of India, the women are facing various types of torture including sexual harassment, rape, bride burning, female feticide, etc. He said that country is debating Capital punishment for rape accused yet the need of the hour is to strengthen the prosecution process. “The rape is a non-bail able offence yet the accused get bail due to weak case prepared by the prosecution besides the stigma attached to victims of rape and sexual harassment,” he said adding the Supreme Court of India has issued clear cut directions in the case of rape victims but the state and central government have scant regard for the same.
Mr. Chuni said that S.O.S. International has filed a Public Interest Litigation whereby J&K government violating the Supreme Court of India guidelines about not disclosing the name of rape victims, issued a list with name and parentage of rape victims on the Floor of the J&K Legislative Assembly. “SOS International is going to file an urgency memo in the same with prayer to decide the case on priority issuing directions to the government to make the roads safe for the female folk”, he said.
Mr. Chuni further said that Union Home Minister has issued a statement claiming that every bus would be provided with a Home Guard jawan for the security of the female folk travelling in buses, which seem to be a ploy to hoodwink the common masses. The politicians and their kin who are insulated from such like dangers issue such statements and then forget, he said adding same measures were issued after Kandhar hijack drama and no implementation was ensured after that.
SOS International chairman Rajeev Chuni demanded that Police stations in states where there is high rate of crime against women should have
CCTV cameras so that when a victim of rape or sexual harassment approaches the concerned police station, the approach and behavior of concerned police officials are recorded. He said that suicide by rape victim in Patiala is a live example of how corrupt and unsympathetic police officials instead of helping the rape victim tried to pressurize her for a compromise resulting into the suicide by the rape victim.
Mr. Chuni asked the people of the country not to let the government use its oft repeated ploy of lingering on the issue and seek strict implementation of the existing laws against the harassment and victimization of female folk besides action against those responsible for the perpetuation of such like crimes all over the country.
