Another National Honour for Padam Shri Dr. Jitendra Udhampuri
Jammu,August 28 (Scoop News) –Padam Shree Dr. Jitendra Udhampuri received Sahitya Akademi’s Prestigious Translation Award, 2011 for Dogri translation of famous Urdu Novel ‘Do Gaz Zameen’ from the President, Sahitya Akademi in a glittering function held recently in Bhuvenashwar (Oddisa). The Award carries an inscribed copper plaque, citation and cash prize of Rs.50,000/-.
Eminent poet, writer, scholar and critic Dr. Jitendra Udhampuri besides being a reputed broadcaster has ceaselessly worked for over 50 years for the enrichment of Dogri, Hindi and Urdu languages and literature. He is the author of 30 books in Dogri, Hindi and Urdu languages which included The History of Dogri Literature, The History of Dogra Culture, The great epic “Jitto”, A Dewan of Gazals, Duggar Naama, Geet Ganga, Thehra Hua Kohra, De Do Ek Vasant, Samya Sach Bolta Hai, Tenhaiyan and Dil Darvesh in addition to a number of research articles and radio features. Some of his notable works have been translated in other languages like English, Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, Nepali and Czech. He is a trend setter in Modern Dogri Poetry and has introduced several innovative themes and experimented with new styles in his verse. As a seasoned broadcaster also, his services have been commendable. He is a man of respect and reputation among the state media circles.
His yeoman service to the cause of Dogri Literature and Culture has been recognized by numerous honours and awards conferred on him at the state, National and International levels. These included Prestigious Padma Shri Award-2010, Sahitya Akademi Award-1981, another national Award by the Central Hindi Directorate, Ministry of Human Resources, New Delhi-1990, Prestigious Senior Fellowship by Union Ministry of Culture-2007, Robe of Honour by the Governor, J&K State-1987, Gold Medal and Certificate of Merit by J&K Government in 1993, State Government’s Republic Day Award-2005, Man of the year 1998, 2003 and prestigious “World Medal of Honour” in 2004 by the American Biographical Institute, USA besides having been decorated four times in 1985, 1986, 1990, 2004 and the prestigious translation award-2011 by the J&K State Academy of Art, Culture and Languages for his best creative literary works in addition to Life Time Achievement Award in 2008. He is also recipient of “Duggar Ratan Samman” from Madam Sonia Gandhi in 2004 and “Dogra Ratan Samman” from the Governor J&K in 2007 besides of “Varishth Hindi-Sevi Pratibha Samman” by Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan (Deemed University) Jammu in 2003 and 2009. He was also honoured by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in the year 2010.
Dr. Udhampuri’s unassuming personality is further embellished by his unceasing devotion to the cause of the poor, the suffering and the down-trodden. He has been a member of Management Committee of J&K State Red Cross Society. He was honoured by the Society on World Red Cross Day for his exemplary contribution to the Society in the year 2010.
Dr. Udhampuri is proud son of the State whose creative works speak of a global vision. He has brought honour and dignity to the state and its people by his remarkable contribution in the field of Dogri and Hindi Literature, Scholarship and social work.
