Statue of Braveheart Naib Subedar Chuni Lal unveiled at Bhaderwah
Jammu,July 07 (Scoop News) - In a simple but solemn and touching ceremony, the statue of Braveheart Triple Gallantry Award Winner Late Naib Subedar Chuni Lal, Ashok Chakra, Vir Chakra, Sena Medal of 8 JAK LI was unveiled by Major General J P Alex, the Colonel of the JAK LI Regiment, at the Gatha Park in Bhaderwah today.

Naib Subedar Chuni Lal was born in Bhaderwah in 1968 and joined the JAK LI Regiment of the elite Infantry, in 1984. He was a daring soldier even in his days of infancy as a soldier, and during the course of his service he had a record of combat experience, any soldier would yearn to have. He was part of the chosen team of soldiers which had captured the famous ‘Quaid’ (subsequently renamed ‘Bana’) Post in the Siachen Glacier, and was awarded the Sena Medal for his conspicuous act of gallantry, during this daring action, in the face of extreme challenging odds.

In August 2000, while serving with his unit (8 JAK LI) in the Poonch Sector of J&K, Nb Sub Chuni Lal, displayed exemplary bravery, in defeating an enemy attack on his post, by shooting dead two attackers, in fierce hand-to-hand combat, an act of bravery for which he was awarded the Vir Chakra.

For an ordinary soldier, these valorous acts would probably have been enough to sit back on his laurels, but from Nb Sub Chuni Lal more acts of even greater bravery were yet to follow. In June 2007, while commanding an ambush party near the LoC in the Poonch sector, Nb Sub Chuni Lal was engaged in a fierce fire-fight with militants.
