| Horticulture Department organises Kisan Mela-cum-Food and Flower Exhibition in Leh | |
Leh, September 05 (Scoop News)-The Department of Horticulture, UT Ladakh, organised a Kisan Mela-cum-Food and Flower Exhibition at the Chief Horticulture Office, Agling, today.
The event was graced by Chief Secretary, UT Ladakh, Ashish Kundra, as the Chief Guest, while Commissioner/Secretary, Tsewang Tharchin, attended as the Guest of Honour.
The Chief Secretary formally inaugurated the Kisan Mela and visited the various stalls showcasing a diverse range of horticultural produce, food products, flowers and other activities undertaken by farmers and beneficiaries.
Director, Horticulture, Tsewang Phunchok, delivered the welcome address and expressed gratitude to the Chief Secretary and other dignitaries for gracing the occasion. He highlighted the initiatives being undertaken by the Horticulture Department to strengthen the sector and support farmers through modern technologies, improved practices and integrated services. He reiterated the department’s commitment to promoting sustainable horticulture and enhancing the livelihood opportunities of farmers and entrepreneurs.
On the occasion, the Chief Secretary, along with other dignitaries, released the Annual Report of the Department of Horticulture for 2025–26. He also felicitated progressive farmers and beneficiaries and distributed prizes in recognition of their achievements and contributions to the horticulture sector.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Secretary emphasised the vital role of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs in strengthening the local economy and promoting sustainable livelihoods in Ladakh. He stressed the need to explore the vast potential of the agriculture and horticulture sectors and encouraged farmers and entrepreneurs to adopt modern technologies and innovative practices.
Highlighting the importance of developing the agricultural potential of the region, the Chief Secretary stressed an integrated approach towards horticulture services. He called for greater inter-departmental coordination among the Agriculture, Horticulture and Cooperative Departments to ensure better convergence of schemes and services and provide comprehensive support to farmers.
The Chief Secretary also highlighted the potential of the dairy sector and milk production, stressing the need to strengthen related services and infrastructure. He further spoke about financial assistance and loans available through SIDCO for expansion of agricultural and allied activities and assured the farmers and entrepreneurs of continued support from the Administration.
The event also featured vibrant cultural performances, adding colour and enthusiasm to the Kisan Mela and providing an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh alongside its agricultural and horticultural achievements.
