| EC Altaf Hussain, DC Rakesh Kumar Visit Flash Flood-Affected Badgam | | Review Relief Measures and Long-Term Mitigation Plan |
Kargil, August 06 (Scoop News)-Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Altaf Hussain, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar (IAS), today visited the flash flood-affected village of Badgam, Karkit, where they interacted with the local residents and reviewed the damage caused by the recent flash floods at Panchayat Ghar Badgam.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner and Executive Councillor held detailed discussions with the villagers regarding immediate relief measures, compensation, rehabilitation, and long-term solutions to safeguard the village from future flood disasters. Officials from various line departments including Revenue, Irrigation & Flood Control, R&B, Mechanical Engineering, Rural Development and other concerned departments were also present.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar emphasized that the priority is to develop a permanent and sustainable solution to protect the village from future flash floods. He highlighted the need for constructing a scientifically planned flood channel/trench (Nallah) and sought feedback from the local residents regarding the historical alignment of old drainage channels to facilitate proper planning.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the Irrigation & Flood Control Department, Revenue Department, R&B Department, and Mechanical Engineering Department to conduct a joint field survey in consultation with the local people, prepare a feasible alignment map for the proposed trench, and submit a comprehensive report at the earliest so that an appropriate long-term mitigation plan can be formulated.
The villagers demanded allotment of suitable land within Revenue Village Karkit for the rehabilitation of vulnerable families in the future. They also requested immediate compensation for losses caused by the flash floods, installation of a submersible pump to restore drinking water supply, removal of debris and boulders from river outlets and drainage channels, desilting of irrigation canals, and early restoration of damaged irrigation kuls to save the standing crops.
Responding to the concerns, the Deputy Commissioner assured the public that compensation for eligible losses would be processed promptly under the provisions of the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). He further directed the Block Development Officer and the Irrigation & Flood Control Department to expedite the restoration of irrigation canals and ensure that the damaged irrigation infrastructure is repaired without delay.
The Deputy Commissioner gave a patient hearing to all the issues raised by the villagers and assured them that every possible assistance would be extended in accordance with the rules and government provisions.
Executive Councillor Altaf Hussain thanked Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar for personally visiting the affected village, patiently listening to the grievances of the people, and taking prompt decisions on both immediate relief and long-term mitigation measures. He also expressed gratitude to all the officers of the concerned line departments for their presence and commitment towards addressing the issues of the affected residents.
