| Grand Oath Ceremony held for newly electedlleadership of Nowgam Traders Association | |  Srinagar, June 24 (Scoop News)-Following the successful conduct of historic elections that witnessed unprecedented voter participation, the Traders Association Nowgam on Tuesday held a grand oath-taking ceremony at Eidgah Nowgam Bonpora, Srinagar where the newly elected President and General Secretary formally assumed the charge. The transparent handover and takeover process, conducted before hundreds of traders and stakeholders, marked a new chapter in the association's democratic journey and reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, unity and responsible leadership.
The Chief Guest on the occasion, SHO Police Station Nowgam, Masarat Ahmad, could not attend the function due to official engagements. However, he deputed police officers Sharun Kumar and Ravinder Singh to represent the Police Department at the event.
Among the other distinguished guests present on the occasion were representatives of various religious and local community head members, including President of Masjid-e-Numan Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, President of Masjid-e-Umar Nazir Ahmad, President of Masjid-e-Mustafa Habib Ullah Dar, President of Masjid-e-Gousia Ghulam Hassan Sofi, President of Masjid-e-Ibraheem Feroz Ahmad Bhat, President of Masjid-e-Jamia Ahli Hadees Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, and President of Masjid-e-Ashra Mubashira Mohammad Yousuf Bhat.
The ceremony was attended by a large gathering of traders, business owners, community members and representatives of various mosques from Nowgam and adjoining areas. The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by speeches highlighting the importance of trade, ethical business practices and collective community development.
The oath of office was administered by KTMF Senior Vice President and Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din, who had earlier conducted the historic elections of the association. The newly elected President Hilal Ahmad Wani and General Secretary Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat formally took oath and assumed their respective responsibilities amid applause from the gathering.
A key highlight of the programme was the transparent handover and takeover ceremony conducted openly before the public, allowing traders and stakeholders to witness the transition of leadership firsthand. Participants widely appreciated the process as a symbol of democratic maturity and institutional accountability.
The election process had earlier created history with an unprecedented voter turnout. Out of 416 eligible voters, 411 traders exercised their franchise, reflecting the confidence of the trading community in democratic institutions and representative leadership.
The elections were conducted under the supervision of the Election Committee comprising Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din, Presiding Officer Bashir Ahmad, Polling Officers Jan Mohammad Ahanger and Bashir Ahmad Bhat. The polling process had been hailed across the trade fraternity for being peaceful, transparent and fair.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din congratulated the newly elected leadership and commended the traders for upholding democratic traditions.
"The successful completion of these elections and today's oath-taking ceremony reflects the unity, discipline and democratic spirit of the traders of Nowgam. The transparent handover and takeover process conducted before the public is a shining example of accountability and institutional integrity. I congratulate the newly elected President and General Secretary and urge them to work selflessly for the welfare of every trader. I also thank every voter, election official, observer, police department especially SHO Police Station Nowgam, President’s Intizamia Committees of Different mosques, and member of the trade fraternity who contributed to making this democratic exercise a grand success," he said.
Addressing the gathering after taking oath, newly elected President Hilal Ahmad Wani expressed heartfelt gratitude to the traders for reposing their trust and confidence in his leadership. He also extended special thanks to Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din and the entire Election Committee for conducting the elections in a free, fair, transparent and highly professional manner.
Wani said "I am deeply humbled by the overwhelming support and trust shown by the traders of Nowgam. This victory does not belong to an individual; it belongs to the entire trading community. I sincerely thank Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din, the Election Committee, polling staff and all those who worked tirelessly to ensure a transparent, peaceful and credible electoral process. Their dedication has strengthened the democratic foundations of our association. My priority will be to strengthen the association, address traders' concerns, improve market infrastructure and ensure that every trader's voice is heard and respected. Together, we will work for the progress, prosperity and dignity of our market,".
Newly elected General Secretary Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat thanked the members for their participation and pledged dedicated service to the association.
He said "The remarkable participation of traders in the election process demonstrates their commitment towards collective leadership and responsible representation. I assure every member that I will work with sincerity, transparency and dedication to safeguard the interests of our business community. We will strive to build a stronger, more organized and more effective Traders Association for the benefit of all stakeholders,".
Meanwhile, Firdous Rashid, PRO to the newly elected President, who efficiently conducted the proceedings and closely witnessed the handover and takeover process, lauded the enthusiastic participation of traders, representatives of various institutions and members of the community, describing it as a reflection of the unity and democratic spirit of the trading fraternity.
He said "Today's gathering has demonstrated the strength, unity and brotherhood of the trading community of Nowgam. The presence of a large number of traders, respected mosque representatives and civil society members made this occasion truly memorable. On behalf of the newly elected leadership, I express heartfelt gratitude to everyone who took time out to participate in this historic event. We seek the cooperation and support of all sections of society as we move forward towards a stronger and more vibrant trading community,".
The gathering also heard brief but meaningful remarks from religious leaders, including President Masjid-e-Ashra Mubashira Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, who highlighted the significance of trade in Islam and stressed the importance of honesty, integrity and service in business dealings.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for peace, prosperity and the continued development of the Nowgam business community.
