Sikh delegation meets Sat Sharma, seeks enhanced security for Hemkund Sahib pilgrims

Jammu, June 22 (Scoop News)-A Sikh delegation led by S. Balvinder Singh Soodan, Convenor, BJP Refugee Cell, Jammu & Kashmir, met Sat Sharma, MP Rajya Sabha, and BJP President, JKUT, and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing serious concern over recent incidents involving members of the Sikh community in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

J&K BJP General Secretary Baldev Singh Billawaria, MLA Devyani Rana and other senior BJP leaders were also present on the occasion.

During the meeting, the delegation expressed concern over certain unfortunate incidents reported from different parts of the country, which have caused anxiety among various sections of society, especially Sikh community and raised concerns about communal harmony, brotherhood, and mutual trust. The memorandum urged the Union Home Minister to take appropriate measures to strengthen peace, social cohesion, and public confidence, while ensuring the safety, security, and dignity of all pilgrims and religious sites across the country.

Referring to the recent incident near Shri Hemkund Sahib, S. Balvinder Singh Soodan stated that the matter has generated widespread concern among Sikh devotees. He emphasized that Shri Hemkund Sahib is one of the holiest Sikh shrines associated with the penance of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj and attracts thousands of pilgrims from across India and abroad every year.

The memorandum appealed to Amit Shah and the concerned state governments to ensure adequate security arrangements during the Shri Hemkund Sahib Yatra. Soodan pointed out that during the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, comprehensive security arrangements are made from Lakhanpur to the Holy Cave Shrine to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims. Similar security arrangements, he said, should be implemented along the Hemkund Sahib Yatra route, particularly at sensitive locations, to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain peace and harmony.

The delegation further emphasized that any misunderstanding or tension between local residents and Sikh pilgrims should be addressed promptly through effective administrative intervention. “The historic bond of brotherhood between Sikhs and Hindus is strong and should not be allowed to be disturbed by isolated incidents or anti-social elements,” Soodan said.

Expressing concern over reports of attacks on Sikh individuals in Himachal Pradesh, the delegation urged the state government to take effective measures to ensure the safety and security of Punjabis, especially members of the Sikh community residing in or visiting the state. It stressed that any acts of violence, intimidation, or targeted attacks must be dealt with firmly and impartially, and strict action should be taken against those responsible.

The memorandum also referred to a recent video from Uttar Pradesh allegedly showing the assault of a Sikh youth, stating that such incidents have caused pain and concern among members of the Sikh community. The delegation called for a fair and transparent investigation and appropriate legal action to ensure justice.

“The Sikh community has always stood for national unity, peace, and communal harmony. Our objective is to strengthen the spirit of brotherhood, mutual respect, and national integration. Every devotee and pilgrim should be able to visit religious places without fear and in a peaceful environment,” Soodan said.

Sat Sharma received the memorandum addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and assured the delegation that their concerns would be conveyed to the appropriate authorities for necessary consideration.

The delegation expressed confidence that the Government of India and the concerned state administrations would take all necessary measures to maintain law and order, preserve communal harmony, and safeguard the rights and security of all citizens.
