Administration Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping
Rongo Slopes Cleared After Viral Post, Fines Imposed on Violators
Kargil, May 25 (Scoop News)-Taking swift cognizance of a viral social media post highlighting the alarming accumulation of garbage at the Rongo slopes in Kurbathang, the District Administration Kargil launched an immediate cleanliness drive and successfully cleared the entire site of waste.

The Rongo slopes, located below the Barchay and Tumail Colony area, had recently drawn public attention after images circulated online depicting large-scale dumping of garbage, raising serious environmental and public health concerns.

Acting promptly, the District Administration, in coordination with the Municipal Committee Kargil, mobilized resources and manpower to undertake a comprehensive cleanup operation. The accumulated waste was removed, restoring the area and preventing further environmental degradation.

In addition to the cleanup drive, the Administration has imposed fines on individuals found responsible for illegal dumping at the site. Strict action has been taken against violators as per municipal sanitation by-laws to deter such practices in the future.

The Administration has once again urged the general public to strictly adhere to waste segregation norms and dispose of garbage only at designated locations, as repeatedly notified through official channels. It emphasized that irresponsible disposal of waste, especially in ecologically sensitive areas, poses a serious threat to water sources, public health, and the environment.

The District Administration further emphasized that, as per the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2026, waste must be segregated at source into four categories—wet, dry, sanitary, and hazardous—and handed over to Municipal Committee collection vehicles. The public has been strictly advised to follow these norms to ensure efficient waste management and to prevent environmental hazards caused by improper disposal.

The District Administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining cleanliness across Kargil and appealed to citizens to cooperate in ensuring sustainable waste management practices for a cleaner and healthier region.
