JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami Raises Key Student Issues with Rajya Sabha MP Adv. Vivek Tankha

Srinagar, April 28 (Scoop News)-The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) National Convenor Nasir Khuehami on Tuesday held a detailed and extensive meeting with Emminent Supreme Court lawyer Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, Adv. Vivek Tankha, in New Delhi to deliberate on a wide range of pressing issues concerning students and marginalised communities from Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, which lasted around Two hours, witnessed in-depth discussions on several long-pending and emergent concerns requiring urgent parliamentary and administrative intervention.

A major focus of the interaction was the alarming rise in incidents of harassment, intimidation, and physical assaults against Kashmiri shawl sellers and traders across various parts of the country. Khuehami highlighted a disturbing and recurring pattern of targeting in states such as Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttarakhand, where traders; many of whom have been engaged in this livelihood for decades, have faced violence, extortion, arbitrary evictions, and social profiling. He underscored the urgent need for coordinated intervention by state authorities to ensure their safety, dignity, and livelihood protection.

During the meeting, Khuehami raised concerns regarding the ongoing hostel crisis at Jamia Millia Islamia, highlighting acute accommodation shortages, lack of transparency in allotment processes, and the resulting academic and psychological challenges faced by students. He apprised the MP of repeated representations made by JKSA highlighting acute accommodation shortages, lack of transparent allotment mechanisms, and the severe academic and psychological distress faced by students, especially those from economically weaker backgrounds. Despite sustained advocacy through formal submissions and public platforms, he noted that the issue remains unresolved.

Khuehami urged the establishment of dedicated student grievance redressal cells at Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University to address complaints in a timely manner, prevent discrimination, and strengthen institutional engagement with students from Jammu and Kashmir.

Responding to the concerns, Tankha gave a patient and detailed hearing and assured that he would formally raise these matters during the upcoming session of Parliament. He further stated that he would take up these issues with the concerned ministries, state governments, and the Union Government to ensure that they are examined on merit and resolved at the earliest possible time.

Khuehami described the interaction as “constructive and meaningful” and expressed gratitude for the MP’s responsiveness and assurance of support. He also acknowledged Adv. Tankha’s consistent efforts in prioritising and supporting issues concerning students from the region.

Tankha appreciated JKSA’s sustained efforts in addressing student concerns across the country, particularly its role in crisis interventions, advocacy, and youth engagement. He described the organisation as a significant platform connecting policy, academia, and student voices from J&K, and encouraged it to continue highlighting key issues while contributing meaningfully to the broader developmental and educational discourse of the region.
