| Karnataka to offer 75% discount on treatment for journalists above 60 | | Government to extend Yashasvini and simplify pension benefits to senior journalists | 
Bengaluru,January 21 (Scoop News)- Our department has taken the initiative to provide special benefits to journalists who have devoted their lives to correcting and guiding society. All journalists above 60 years of age will receive a 75% concession on medical treatment in all hospitals under the Department of Medical Education. They will have to pay only a nominal fee, said Dr. Sharanprakash R. Patil, Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, Livelihood and In‑charge Minister for Raichur District.
He was speaking after distributing health cards to senior journalists at a programme jointly organised by the Department of Medical Education, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and the Senior Journalists’ Forum here on Wednesday.
In consultation with the Chief Minister, a decision will also be taken in the coming days on granting a concession on the remaining 25% of treatment costs, he clarified. “Journalists are the responsibility of our government. We are committed to ensuring that retired senior journalists are able to lead a dignified life,” he said.
Dr. Patil added that pension facilities are being provided to senior journalists who have retired after contributing significantly to society through their profession, and that steps will be taken to simplify the rules and procedures of this pension scheme.
The Minister further said that, after discussions with officials, a decision will be taken to extend the benefits of the Yashasvini health scheme to senior journalists as well. “Providing good health facilities to representatives of the media, the fourth pillar of the Constitution, is our primary objective. In this direction, identity cards are being issued to senior journalists through Jayadeva Institute,” he noted.
