| Training under MIDH Sponsored Project Unlocks Sustainable Farming | | 
Leh, January 08 (Scoop News)-A one-day training and awareness programme was organised today under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) at Basgo village by the School of Agriculture Science and Technology (SAS&T), University of Ladakh, Stakna Campus, in collaboration with KVK-Nyoma. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of more than 50 farmers from the region.
The programme commenced with a detailed session by Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma, who enlightened the participants on soil health management through natural farming practices. He highlighted the importance of using Jeevamrutha, composting, and other organic fertilizers for sustainable agriculture and compared different organic nutrient sources, recommending the most effective options suitable for local conditions.
Following this, Dr. Kunzes Angmo, Junior Scientist (Forestry), spoke on the scope for the cultivation of asafoetida (Hing) in the Ladakh region. She motivated the farmers to explore this high-value crop as a potential source of income diversification and regional development. She also created awareness about pursuing a career in agriculture by seeking admission to BSc Agriculture programmes, highlighting their future scope and opportunities for youth in the region.
In the next session, Dr. Sonam Spaldon, Junior Scientist (Vegetable Science), emphasized the importance of protected cultivation and strategies for off-season vegetable production, focusing particularly on leafy vegetables. She also elaborated on the immense potential of vegetable seed production in Ladakh’s unique agro-climatic conditions.
Concluding the technical sessions, Dr. Tsering Lanzes (Pomologist) delivered a talk on orchard management, emphasizing orchard sanitation, canopy management, and the problem of alternate bearing its causes and control measures. She also addressed farmers’ queries on pest management in fruit crops and suggested practical solutions to enhance orchard productivity.
The event was well-received by the farming community, who appreciated the expert guidance and recommendations provided by the scientists. The programme successfully enhanced farmers’ awareness of sustainable farming, crop diversification, and scientific management practices tailored to Ladakh’s unique environment.
