Leh,December 04 (Scoop News)- The Watershed Mahotsav was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Takmachik Micro Watershed under the WDC-2 Khaltsi Project, covering the Singay Lalok and Skurbuchan blocks. The event was graced by Shri Mohd Sharief, SDM Khaltsi, as the Chief Guest, and witnessed active participation from WDT members, SHGs, UGs, Watershed Yoddhas, religious heads, villagers of Khaltsi block, and teachers and students of PM Shri Government Middle School, reflecting strong community engagement in watershed development.

During the event, community leaders including the Nambardar of Takmachik and Hanu and the Chairman of Hanu expressed deep appreciation for the impactful interventions taken up by the Watershed Department. They highlighted the successful completion of headworks and I-khuls under the Natural Resource Management (NRM) component, which have significantly improved irrigation water distribution, and also thanked the department for the Springshed Rejuvenation initiative that has restored a crucial spring now serving as the main drinking and domestic water source for the local population.

The Nambardar and Chairman of Takmachik further acknowledged the department’s efforts in land development, including bench terracing, construction of water reservoirs, chain-link fencing of community culturable wasteland, and establishment of fruit orchards in collaboration with the Irrigation Department and Go Organic Go Green NGOs. These interventions have transformed previously uncultivated areas into productive agricultural land, thereby enhancing local livelihoods. Under the Production Component, the community also appreciated the distribution of hybrid vegetable seeds under mulching techniques, provision of free agriculture tool kits to all households, and remodelling of traditional water mills across the micro watersheds of WDC-2, all of which have strengthened crop diversification, cash-crop cultivation, and food security.

Project Officer and Nodal Officer Smt. Shenaz presented a detailed review of the various completed works, covering the NRM interventions such as land development, bench terracing, I-khuls, headworks, Amrit Sarovars, water harvesting structures, chain-link fencing, and springshed rejuvenation, as well as Production and Livelihood initiatives including crop diversification, mulching film techniques, and support to SHGs. She urged the community to ensure Janbhagidari by taking collective responsibility for the upkeep and sustainability of the assets created under the project. She also encouraged women SHGs to continue pursuing livelihood activities and emphasized the significance of soil and moisture conservation in sustaining local ecosystems. On the occasion, she handed over modern equipment, including a solar-driven oil expeller, fruit juice machine, and milk churner, to SHGs in the presence of the Chairman and Secretary to strengthen local food processing units.

Addressing the gathering, SDM Khaltsi Shri Mohd Sharief commended the Watershed Department for its dedicated efforts and appreciated the active involvement of the community in various watershed activities. He stressed the importance of soil and water conservation as key pillars of sustainable development and encouraged villagers to ensure higher enrolment of children in local schools to strengthen human resource development in the region.

The event also featured cultural and community activities, including a quiz competition by students of PM Shri Government Middle School on the theme “Khet ki Pani Khet Mein, Gaon ki Pani Gaon Mein,” followed by distribution of prizes and refreshments. The programme concluded with Shramdaan, during which participants cleaned the land development site as an act of community service. The event also included the Lokarpan of completed watershed works and the Bhumi Poojan for upcoming interventions under the NRM component, performed by the respected religious head, Lamaji, marking the formal commencement of the next phase of developmental works.
