| Courts are our last hope:Mehbooba Mufti | | Srinagar, November 03 (Scoop News)-Behind every number and every case, there is a story, a mother waiting for her son, a father growing old in silence, a child sleeping each night without knowing when their parent will return,Said PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti.
Mehbooba was talking to reporters said that the issue of prisoners is not political, humanity, and compassion. These young men are not statistics; they are our children, the sons of this soil. They deserve dignity, a fair trial, and a chance to rebuild their lives.
She said that For years, hundreds of our youth have been lodged in prisons far away from home, in Agra, Bareilly, Haryana, and other states. Their families neither have the means nor the strength to travel such long distances. Trials are delayed, hearings are held in their absence, and justice remains out of reach. This is not the idea of justice that our Constitution envisions.
Today, we urge the Hon’ble Chief Justice to initiate comprehensive reforms in the criminal justice system of Jammu & Kashmir:
Local Lodgement: Prisoners must be kept within their home region so families can meet them and they can face a fair trial.
Speedy Trials: Justice delayed is justice denied. Every delay is a violation of Article 21 — the right to life and liberty.
Transparency in Trials: The accused must be present at every hearing — justice cannot be delivered in absence.
‘Bail, Not Jail’: Detention should be the exception, not the rule.
Remission, Parole & Furlough: These are legal rights, not political favours. Medical Bail: Must be treated as a constitutional and humanitarian safeguard.
Implementation of Jail Manuals: Prisons must reform lives, not destroy them.
We have faith in our judiciary and hope in our courts. I believe the day is not far when justice will prevail, and our courts will ensure the ‘Ghar Wapsi’ — the return of all J&K prisoners to their homeland.
