DU Elections 2025: J&K Students Association Extends Support to NSUI and Left Parties | |
Srinagar, September 16 (Scoop News)-The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Tuesday has extended its support to the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the Left student parties in the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, announcing backing for two posts each.
In a statement, the Association’s National Convenor, Nasir Khuehami, said that the decision reflects Association’s commitment to strengthening student-centric politics and safeguarding democratic values on campus. “We believe that DU’s future lies in the hands of those who speak for students, not for communal or corporate interests. Our support to NSUI and Left candidates is a conscious choice to ensure that students’ voices are represented by forces that prioritize education, inclusivity, and justice over divisive and communal propaganda,” the association said.
Khuehami announced that the Association, along with students from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh will support NSUI’s presidential candidate Joslyn Nandita Choudhary and vice-presidential candidate Rahul Jhansa, as well as Left candidate Abhinandana for secretary and Abhishek Kumar for joint secretary.
The Association strongly criticized divisive and communal outfits for “destroying the democratic culture of universities, criminalizing dissent, and using muscle and money power to subvert student politics.” It warned that the rise of authoritarian tendencies within campuses “poses a grave threat to the idea of universities as spaces of free thought, debate, and collective action.”
“Delhi University has historically been the nerve centre of democratic resistance and progressive politics. By supporting NSUI and the Left, we are reaffirming our stand against the erosion of academic freedoms and against the politics of fear and hate.
The Association urged students from Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh to vote wisely and reject divisive politics that seek to polarize campuses along communal lines. “The DUSU elections are not just about four posts; they are about the future of our universities, about whether campuses will continue to be spaces of debate and diversity, or be reduced to echo chambers of authoritarianism. Our call is simple; choose democracy, choose student issues, choose inclusivity,” it said.
Association reiterated its commitment to building solidarity across student communities in India, emphasizing that “the fight is for affordable education, better hostels, safety for women and Minorities, scholarships, decentralized representation, and against the commercialization of higher education, not for hate.”
The Association further stressed that, “Elections must remain free and fair. Intimidation, hooliganism, and coercion have no place in student democracy. Diversity of opinion is natural in any university, but it should never be used to stifle voices or silence dissent. Student politics must be about ideas and issues, not violence and vendetta. The true test of democracy is whether every student feels safe and empowered to cast their vote without fear", it added further.
