SJFI to meet union minister Ashwani Vaishnav with key demands on Senior Journalists’ welfare | | New Delhi,September 16 (Scoop News)-The Senior Journalists' Federation of india (SJFI), the newly launched national organization of senior journalists in the country, will meet Union Minister Aswani Vahnav in charge of Information & Broadcasting, with a charter of demands including a national pension scheme, proper healthcare and insurance systems for senior journalists and setting up of a national media commission to take stock of the pressing concerns of the profession and senior journalists.
The meeting of the national committee of the SJFI, held online on Monday, was presided over by its president Sandeep Dikshit. Its secretary general N P Chekkutty presented report. The decisions of the meeting are:
The SJFI leaders will meet the Union Cabinet Minister Aswani Vaishnav in charge of Information & Broadcasting in the Union Government and other ministers in January 2026 at the time of the budget session of Parliament to submit memorandums on the key demands of the SJFI as finalised at its first-ever national conference at Thiruvananthapuram during August 19-21, 2025. The first national council of the SJFI will be held in New Delhi during the same period, which will finalise and adopt the draft of the memorandum to the government, the constitution of SJFI and decide on the future course of actions. A sub-committee set up for vetting the draft constitution presented at the national conference and recommend necessary amendments for final adoption. These recommendations will be presented to the national council in January in the form of amendments to the draft. The following will be the members of the sub-committee: Sri. Sandeep Dikshit, president, Sri. N P Chekkutty, secretary general, Sri. C Gouridasan Nair (Kerala), Sri. Anandam Pulipalupula (Telangana), Smt. K Santhakumari (Karnataka) & Alexander Sam (Kerala). Sri. Gouridasan Nair will be the convener of the sub-committee and he will be responsible for holding conferences / consultations with members and any other persons for the purpose and submit the recommendations within the time frame of one month. The registration of SJFI will be done with New Delhi as its headquarters. For this an office address has to be arranged. The Delhi unit of the SJFI will take steps to find a suitable place at the earliest. Sri. K P Vijayakumar, SJFI treasurer and general secretary of the Kerala unit, will be in charge of the coordination of matters connected with the registration of the organization. A fund collection drive will be undertaken for raising urgent funds for the SJFI activities. For this, each member of the national executive committee will contribute a minimum amount of Rs. 1000/- or more. The national council members also will be requested to make similar contributions.
The meeting condoled the passing of Sangharshan Thakur, eminent journalist and editor of the Telegraph in Delhi recently.
It also placed on record its appreciation of the excellent organization of the first ever national conference held at Thiruvananthapuram. All members of the Kerala unit, the office bearers of the reception committee, officials of the Kerala Government and the general public in the capital city supported wholeheartedly to make it a grand success, the meeting noted.
Sri. Sandeep Dikshit, in his presidential remarks, noted the urgent tasks before the SJFI at the national level to ensue basic minimum for social security for senior journalist in various states. He also pointed out out the need to focus on social and emotional welfare of senior journalists building camaraderie among them as senior citizens holding programmes like community activities, group tours, old age homes, etc, in various states with public support.
Secretary General N P Chekkutty, in his report, said the urgent need to focus on the six-point agenda which included the adoption of the constitution and bylaws, completing the registration process, the raising of funds for urgent tasks, the state level organizations and attracting more members from various parts of india, etc.
The members like Aswani Kumar from Jammu and Kashmir , Anandam Pulipulupula, Shastri Ramachandran, R Rangaraj, Chandra Prakash Bhardwaj, C Gouridasan Nair, S Sabanayakan, George Kallivayalil, Rima Sarmah, Sreenivasa Reddy, Jayapal Patil, T Janardhan, Kanhu Nanda, Franco Louis and others who spoke at the meeting focused on various issues concerning the senior journalists in India and their welfare, and the need to expand the activities of SJFI in all states and union territories,etc. For better coordination of its work, a website needs to be set up. Organizational matters like age limit for membership,representation of all parts of the country especially the remote parts, etc, were highlighted by many members.
