Omar Govt. Continues Brazen Discrimination Against Jammu – Even in Flood Relief: GL Raina

Jammu, September 07 (Scoop News)-The National Conference–Congress government led by Omar Abdullah has once again exposed its entrenched bias against Jammu. Even in the face of a humanitarian crisis triggered by floods, cloudbursts, and landslides, this regime persists with its old tradition of naked discrimination.

The devastation in the Jammu region has been catastrophic. Lives have been lost, homes flattened, roads and bridges washed away, and countless families left with nothing. Remote and hilly areas remain cut off, their suffering invisible due to broken connectivity. If this is the fate of Jammu city—the capital—one can only imagine the ordeal of the people in far-flung villages. This was stated by Girdhari Lal Raina, former MLC and spokesperson of BJP JK-UT.

And yet, the government’s response tells its own story, He added. While in Kashmir the Chief Minister is hyperactive, surrounded by his cabinet colleagues and local MLAs, in Jammu he turns up with a token team, avoids the worst-hit interiors, and ignores people’s representatives, he said. Relief in Kashmir is fast-tracked; in Jammu, even after two weeks, drinking water has not been restored in several parts of the city, let alone the rural belts.

BJP spokesperson accused Omar Abdullah of restricting his brief to Kashmir division alone while speaking about Inter Ministry Central Teams (IMCT) constituted by the Home Ministry, visiting Jammu Kashmir to assess damage. Even During Home Minister Amit Shah ji’s visit to flood-affected areas, the Chief Minister chose to sulk in the background instead of pressing for Jammu’s urgent needs. This is not just neglect—it is deliberate denial, Raina stressed.

Equally shocking is the silence of NC-Congress ministers. Not a single minister has taken the trouble to spend time with victims in the worst-affected areas of Jammu, Ex MLC observed. Old Jammu city stands as a grim example: families are still struggling for drinking water and ration, many left homeless, and yet the administration remains paralysed. The little help that reached people came from voluntary organisations and local MLAs—not from the government that swore to serve them. Similarly people living in migrant camps were ignored altogether , GL Raina said

This partisan governance is unacceptable. Relief and rehabilitation cannot be rationed by region or religion. If in 2014, focus was on Kashmir because it suffered more, today in 2025 it is Jammu that bears the brunt and deserves special attention. Anything less is injustice.

The BJP strongly condemns this brazenly discriminatory approach of the NC-Congress alliance. We demand an immediate overhaul of the relief mechanism in the Jammu region, deployment of ministers on the ground, and urgent redressal of people’s grievances. Weather vagaries continue to threaten lives—this is the time for decisive governance, not selective sympathy.
