Honoring the Guiding Lights of Society: A Teacher’s Reflection on Teachers’ Day

Prof. (Dr.) Parshant Bakshi

Teachers’ Day is a time for deep reflection and gratitude — a day when we pause to honor those who nurture young minds, ignite curiosity, and shape the destiny of individuals and, ultimately, the nation.

As I reflect on my own journey, I feel a profound sense of privilege and responsibility to be part of this noble profession. For me, teaching has never been just a career; it has always been a calling — a lifelong mission to guide, inspire, and empower young minds to dream big and achieve greater heights.

From the very first day I stepped into a university classroom, I realized that the role of a teacher goes far beyond delivering lectures or completing syllabi. It is about planting seeds of knowledge, instilling values, and cultivating a spirit of inquiry. Over the years, I have been fortunate to teach and mentor countless students in the field of horticulture and fruit science.

The greatest joy for any teacher lies in witnessing their students flourish. Many of my students, once curious learners, are now confident professionals contributing to nation-building — through scientific research, sustainable agricultural practices, entrepreneurship, and policymaking. Some are leading innovative projects promoting climate-smart horticulture, others are working directly with farmers, empowering them with advanced technologies, while many serve in prestigious national and international organizations. Each of their achievements fills my heart with pride and reminds me of the profound words of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan:

"The true teachers are those who help us think for ourselves."

In today’s rapidly changing world, the role of a teacher has become both challenging and rewarding. We are no longer just disseminators of information but architects of the future, equipping the next generation to tackle global challenges like climate change, food security, and sustainable development.

Beyond the classroom, I have sought to broaden my students’ horizons by sharing knowledge through various platforms — including my YouTube channel, which features content in Hindi, Dogri, and English. This outreach allows me to connect with students and stakeholders across the country, making cutting-edge agricultural knowledge more accessible to all.

Teachers’ Day is also a moment to express gratitude — to my mentors, whose wisdom and guidance shaped my path, and to my students, whose enthusiasm and dreams continually inspire me to evolve as a teacher. Their curiosity and dedication fuel my passion to keep learning and innovating.

As I look to the future, I reaffirm my commitment to nurturing students who will become leaders, innovators, and change-makers — individuals driven not only by knowledge but also by integrity, empathy, and a sense of service to society. Ultimately, a teacher’s legacy is not measured by awards or titles but by the lives we touch and the impact our students create in the world.

On this Teachers’ Day, I celebrate not just my personal journey but the collective spirit of teaching — a profession that quietly yet powerfully shapes the soul of a nation.

"A teacher’s purpose is not to create students in their own image, but to help them create themselves."

To all my fellow teachers, may we continue to inspire, guide, and serve, for in shaping the minds of our students, we are truly shaping the future of our nation.
