Congress seeks stepped up rescue, relief, rehabilitation measures


Jammu, September 03 (Scoop News)-- An emergency meeting of District Congress Committee Jammu Urban was held here today at Congress HQ Jammu to review the ongoing situation arising out of incessant rains and floods affecting large number of people.

The meeting convened by President DCC Jammu Urban Shri Manmohan Singh and was Chaired by PCC Working President Shri Raman Bhalla & attended by several Senior leaders and large number of party functionaries including Shri Yogesh Sawhney-Former minister, Rajnish Sharma-Treasurer PCC, Sanjeev Panda, Pawan Dev Singh, Varinder Manhas, Smt. Anuradha Sharma, , Satpal Sapolia, Rakesh Sharma, Nageshwar Narayan Adarsh Sharma, Vijay Kumar, Prabhu Janak Raj, Avtar Krishan, Ram Magotra, Chander Shaker, Lattish Sharma, Kewal Krishan Yogi, Ajay Kumar, Vijant Pathania and others.

Taking stock of the situation, the leaders expressed great concern over the large number of people getting affected due to unprecedented rains & flash floods in most parts of Jammu province, disrupting the vehicular traffic due to huge landslides and affecting the normal life of people besides causing huge damage to the private and public property.

The meeting took strong exception to the failure of the centre govt to announce a mega relief package even after the visit of of Home Minister Amit Shah to Jammu, which is worst affected in the situation caused huge loss of lives including Shree Vaishno Devi pilgrims and Shrer Machail Mata.

The meeting strongly criticised the failure of the authorities to take advance decisions regarding the yatra despite clear warnings and government advisory about the weather situation. The government & authorities issued alerts & warnings to the people however didn't follow the advisory itself leaving the people to face the unfortunate situation.

The Congress leaders also took strong exception to the continued neglect of the general public demand for a high level probe by a sitting or retired judge of the High Court for a free,fair & independent probe to fix responsibility and suggest further guidelines for the same.

They also took strong notice of the Home Minister for not pulling up the administration and the responsible authorities for mismanaging the Yatra and ignoring the justified demand for independent probe.

Addressing the gathering Shri Raman Bhalla asked the GOI to immediately announce a mega relief & rehabilitation package for each category of the affected sections of the current situation and lauded the appeal of the LOP Shri Rahul Gandhi to Government for mega relief package for the worst affected Population of J&K, Punjab etc.

He also termed the announcement of Rs. 209 Crore relief package as a routine share,quite inadequate & peanuts to meets the worst losses and also impressed upon the administration to provide cooked package food to the uprooted Population besides release of free ration materials for the affected people for six months.
He criticized the non availability of free ration in the market so far after several days besides acting on the inputs of the political and social workers about the non availability of chlorine for safe drinking water.

Terming the relief, rehabilitation and restoration measures as inadequate he described it unpreparedness & apathy of the administration and centre government towards the already predicted unprecedented rains& floods situation.

The speakers asked the cadres to assist the affected people in their surroundings and render all sorts of cooperation to the administration besides acting as bridge between people and authorities.

Meeting also held two minutes silence to mourn the loss of more lives in the situation.

Later Shri Raman Bhalla visited Azadnagar area of Jammu to meet the affected families whose two houses collapsed and took stock of the situation. He was accompanied by senior Congress leader Shri Amrit Bali & others.
